Toy Study
(Spring 2017 Digital Photography Project 4)
In this series of photographs I arranged LEGO building sets from my personal collection in real-life environments around the Landmark College campus. I approached this project with a playful attitude, challenging myself to take photographs that brought the sets to life (as you might imagine them to come to life in a play scenario) while still emphasizing their nature as artificial plastic objects by juxtaposing them with life-size scenery with more varied textures and materials. The bright colors of the sets helped to further set them apart from the more naturalistic colors of their surroundings.
For each photo I tried to select scenery contextually appropriate to the sets: placing diminutive LEGO goblins in a peaceful garden, hiding sneaky LEGO ninja amidst a jungle of ornamental houseplants, swooshing magical LEGO dragons across the evening sky, and parking a LEGO race car next to real vehicles in an on-campus lot. I also tried as often as possible to take the photos from "eye level" with the figures, giving their real-life surroundings a vast or towering sense of scale. Staging photos of such tiny toys outside of a controlled studio setting proved to be a particular challenge. But the result is a series of photos which I hope express what make toys like these so exciting and inspiring to me.
I was trying to use forced perspective to make my Meg and Ellie look bigger.
Please tell me if you it worked or not. :)
Also, this is Meg! She's just come to live with Ellie at my home. :D
Me: Say "Hi" to everybody on Tumblr, Ellie!
Ellie: Hi, everyone on Tumblr! *waves*
I was just thinking about my naming of my girls...
My Maryellen mini is called Ellie. Nellie and Ellie are very similar names, so I wanted them to be a bit different. That's why I chose to lengthen Nellie to Eleanor. But that's still very similar to Ellie really.
What else could Nellie be short for? Can it be short for Penelope? (I know that's more often shortened to Penny...)
My Kit mini-doll arrived today - a full WEEK early!!1
Thank you, Amazon Marketplace seller! You are awesome and deserve a 5-star rating! ^^
(pics to follow on the weekend)
I got a bit impulsive, so...Ellie's gonna have her first friend very soon! Well a week and half, give-or-take. :)
Ellie likes to relax with a good book at the end of a long day...
(The book is a genuine miniature, abridged copy of the complete works of Austen, and can be bought for £5 - http://amzn.eu/iib3chK)
