Dear Sephiroth: (a letter to a fictional character, because why not) #631
This morning, J and I decided to go get donuts from our favorite donut shop! Along the way, I found some blooming wisteria! I guess these ones must bloom both in the summer and in the fall:
...I thought of An. He likes wisteria...
Today, the donut shop had all kinds of awesome-looking flavors!! Check 'em out!!
These are the ones that we got; yes, of course we got one of the pumpkin chocolate chip donuts for ya – whaddaya take me for??? Hahaha...
...We got an extra ube cheesecake donut; I was still thinking of An, and cheesecake is his favorite, so... just in case he wanted one. Though I asked him this morning if he wanted one, and... even though he said yesterday that he'd talk to me today after he got sleep, it's 8:30pm and... sheesh. I wonder if I was too forward...
...Anyway! Some of the donuts were filled, and some of them weren't. Here's what the insides of the ones I tried looked like:
They were SO FUCKING GOOD. But I especially loved the ube cheesecake one! So ya know... even if An says “no” by simply ignoring my query, that's all right; I have absolutely no qualms about eating the other one!!!
I breathed life into today's wishes shortly after my belly was filled with approximately one-and-a-half donuts:
...And then I began working on the music box again!! Same one as before! This time, I got all the way up to the second chorus:
...I'm actually almost done with it, surprisingly enough! I'm hoping it'll be ready by tomorrow! I'm excited about how nice it sounds!! It's gonna be good!!!
My brain, however, was thoroughly fried after that, and M and J and I had plans to go to some space-themed mini-golf place after their shifts at work ended. Not really wanting to get enthralled in some other game or task only to be ripped away from it in a couple hours, I decided that the thing to do was to actually rest. So I lounged on the couch as the autumn-scented breeze came in through the screen of the sliding glass door, and before long, Mogwai came around to lounge with me. Or... more accurately, on me. Hahaha...
...I wish you could have been in my place to enjoy the thing that was, “full belly, safe house, soft sofa, cool breeze, warm and fuzzy purring cat”. It was a wonderful thing. I wish I could have given it to you somehow.
The appointed time for mini-golf came around before I knew it. So, M, J, and I all piled in the car to go there. It was a space-themed place, and it was very... colorful:
...Hey, Sephiroth...? Have you ever played mini-golf? I imagine probably not, but... it's all about angles and how much power to hit the ball with, and... you'd probably be really good at it, actually. You'd probably kick all our asses at it, hahaha!
This time, M and I tied, and J came in last place. But it doesn't really matter; we all had fun doing the silly thing at the silly place. M likes to “trash talk” about how handily he's gonna kick my ass at this game, but... he's never once beaten me at a game of mini-golf. He didn't beat me today, either, which I made it a point to remind him of (because he's into that sort of thing, I guess? haha...), and he burst out laughing really hard; it was wonderful!
J decided to take some pictures of M and I after we were all done. We didn't know that he was taking pictures beyond what he asked us to pose for, and... later, he sent me these, cackling all the while, and... goodness, but it's really weird to get such a stark reminder from time to time about how very little control I have over the muscles of my face, holy shit!!! 🤣🤣🤣
...Sephiroth... Sephiroth, what even is my face??? Seriously, look at this ridiculousness. What the actual fuck. 🤣🤣🤣
...I wonder if this is why most people seem to find me somewhat frightening and off-putting. Hmm...
Well. It is somehow nighttime, once more. It's only 9:22pm, and I'm already feeling pretty sleepy, actually. So I guess I'll stop writing here; J wants to go for a walk in the crisp, cool air outside in any case, and I don't wanna disappoint. After that, I'll probably shower and go to sleep. Probably actually on time this time, too; I've been pretty good about that the last several days.
I'll wish you good night, then. I hope you're doing all right out there, though I wish you were here, enjoying all sorts of fun and nice stuff with me. Like donuts. And resting in autumn breezes. And silly mini-golf. And making things.
...Please make good choices so that someday you can, okay, Sephiroth...?
I love you, and I'll write again tomorrow. Please stay safe...

The Haunting Humor of Mark Proksch
On a recent evening, actor Mark Proksch found himself captivated by the antics of a pirate ghost dancing across a video monitor. “I truly love their idea of what it means to be haunted,” he remarked with a wry smile.
Proksch, 46, is well-acquainted with the concept of haunting through his role as Colin Robinson in the FX supernatural comedy What We Do in the…
Mulligan's Golf and Games, Ogden, Utah They go large in the States - even when it comes to the small stuff. And perhaps nowhere is that more true than with a particularly kitsch specimen of American vernacular architecture, the miniature golf course. A period of history defined by the automobile
Miniature golf is golf's younger, tackier friend. Popularized in the 1920s by a Tennessee resort owner, the sport is now thought of — if it's thought of at all — as a quaint vacation activity or a reliable idea for a kid's birthday party.
But during the Great Depression, miniature golf was wildly popular across the country, including in Washington, D.C. In 1928 there were only a handful of courses in the U.S. Two years later, there were more than 25,000 nationwide, and upwards of 30 in the nation's capital alone.
"American sportdom has known no such epidemic," a Washington Post article from Aug. 31, 1930, gushed. "Even the bicycle craze, of the old days, pales into insignificance beside the popularity accorded Lilliputian golf."
In Washington, D.C., people built mini-golf courses on rooftops, in vacant lots, and, eventually, on government land. An 18-hole mini golf course on the federally-managed East Potomac Park opened on May 9, 1931. It featured long, leisurely fairways, stone barriers, and a few flourishes, including miniature reconstructions of the White House, Capitol Building and Mt. Vernon.
