Angstshipping: Ryou Bakura x Marik Ishtar

Both are manipulated by the evil entities associated with their Millennium Items, and it's a uniquely traumatizing experience that they share.

Minorshipping: Ryou Bakura x Duke Devlin

Named because they're both minor characters (you're never minor to me, my darlings). I think they've got a lot in common and Duke would be a very supportive, positive person for Ryou to be with. But also, during Battle City you can pretend that anytime they're both not on screen, they're sneaking away to make out. 😜 I do genuinely adore this ship.

Tendershipping: Ryou Bakura x Yami Bakura

All yami/host ships are kind of obvious in their basis, I think, so they don't need much explaining. But Yami Bakura trying to grant Ryou's wish for friends in the manga and punishing his bullies, then losing a tournament duel to save Ryou's life? Yeah, I could make an omelet out of that. It's emotionally complicated and chock full of angst.

Puffshipping: Ryou Bakura x Joey Wheeler

Just imagine if Ryou had Joey's love and support the way that Yugi does. 😍 I think the ship name comes from them both having puffy hair. It's also really fun because Joey is scared of ghosts and Ryou is totally into that shit.

Duke takes a shower and thinks on what they were just doing together in the bedroom with satisfaction. He goes back to their room when he’s done and sees that Ryou is spooning Joey. Ryou is asleep, Joey is not, and he looks worried. Joey's having insecurities in his mid-20s and Duke tries to give advice. Ryou just snuggles in his sleep.

Duke pushed Joey’s bangs back away from his eyes.

“What’s bothering you?”

“Is it weird that I’m more insecure now than I was in high school?”

Duke dropped his hand from Joey’s hair and perched on the edge of the bed, body turned to face his lovers.

“Adulthood affects everyone differently. For Ryou, it was gaining self-confidence. High school is a bubble, and when it pops, we learn something about ourselves.”

Joey smiled thinly.

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

“You’re just settling into your adult self, Joey.” Duke gave him a sweet kiss. “We’re all still growing into ourselves a little. Physically, none of us are done growing until we’re like twenty-five, I think.”

Joey looked at Duke for a few more moments before letting his eyes drift down.

“Thanks for trying to make me feel better.”

“Sorry that it didn’t work.” Duke straightened up. “I’ll come up with something better and try again tomorrow.”

Duke started moving away to his side of the bed.
