every explanation yugioh has ever provided for Shadi’s Whole Deal: a compilation
Early manga: Shadi is a mortal human man. He’s alive. He rides airplanes. His family has guarded the tombs of pharaohs for generations. He’s motivated by things like petty revenge, intellectual curiosity, and a desire to protect Egyptian artifacts.
First half of Memory World: Shadi is a member of the Tombkeeper Clan. His side of the family got into a fight with the Ishtar side, and they each took some of the Millennium Items in the divorce. He’s motivated by the same duty the Ishtars were raised with: to help the Nameless Pharaoh regain his memories. Every fucked up thing he’s done (giving Pegasus the eye, lying to Malik, trying to kill Yugi’s friends, etc) was presumably part of a game of memory-restoring 4D chess.
Second half of Memory World: Shadi was never human. He’s a shapeshifting supernatural being that serves as Zorc’s equal-and-opposite counterpart. He’s also maybe the human incarnation of that tablet with the Millennium Item-shaped indents in it? Bobasa and Hasan were both him, shapeshifted. His motivation is to stop Zorc. Everything he’s done was presumably part of a game of anti-Zorc 4D chess.
DM anime: Shadi is a ghost. We mostly know this because of an anime-added scene where he saves Honda and Otogi from falling and then vanishes, and they’re like “was that a…g-g-ghost?” We don’t know when he died, or who he used to be. He isn’t Bobasa, the anti-Zorc, or Hasan (but he does briefly pilot Hasan’s Memory World RPG avatar, mostly as a convoluted way for the anime to adapt his death scene. Yes, he dies despite being a ghost). We never really get a motivation for why he did anything.
Capsule Monsters: Shadi has been a ghost for thousands of years. He’s been fucking with people the whole time (including Alexander the Great). Motivation: the lulz?
DSOD: Shadi used to be a mortal human man, up to about 5 or 6 years before the start of the series. He somehow got on his hands on the Secret Eighth Millennium Item. He trained a bunch of children to use it to make a utopia dimension. Then Zorkura killed him. After that, he was a ghost. His motivation was…4D chess for the utopia dimension? Which didn’t actually work?
The irony of this new breed of self-righteous AI hunters on AO3 is that they're all just copy and pasting peoples fics into AI detectors, which are all operated by AI and therefore THEY are feeding people's work into the algorithm without their consent and in some cases no doubt circumventing the locks people put on to avoid getting scraped...
Don't copy and paste anyone's AO3 work into third party websites, you're not the good guys in this situation?

the four dialogues at the start of the fic are actual npc lines in the game. other npc dialogues are woven into the text.
the "many eyes" ryou feels on him as soon as he enters yharnam are the lesser amygdalas infesting the town, watching him. his insight is too low for them to be visible to him at the moment (hes currently at 0 and needs at least 40 or to be at endgame).
there are no lesser amygdalas in central yharnam in the final cut of the game, but theres one in the alpha version. its back there now for the fic 😄
ryous weapons are the saw cleaver and hunter pistol. I initially wrote him using the hunter blunderbuss cuz it looks cooler, but it would be very difficult to miss the rabid dog rushing at him because its shots have a wide spread. sorry ryou, I need you to get quite hurt in this chapter. lore accuracy is my passion!
bakura is where Lonely Old Dear would be in the game.
not sure if I want bakura to be the actual Moon Presence, but he is the one orchestrating everything/backing ryou up with power (the reason why ryou is a dreaming hunter).
bakura is a Great One masquerading as a human. ryou gains insight (the whispers/lightheadedness) as soon as ryou lays eyes on him. this is the in-game sound effect.
bakura is slowly making ryou frenzy. works a bit different in this fic. frenzy only builds up the longer ryou holds eye contact with bakura.
also not sure if I want omegaverse dynamics in this LMAO cuz game lore states Great Ones yearn for surrogate children... well idk if bakura wants children, but he does want ryou for his own, unstated purposes.
this is what the hunter's salutation is supposed to look like, but bakura bastardizes it cuz hes rude.

the horrific raiding of the fishing hamlet mirrors the massacre at kul elna. its lady maria's greatest shame, and she desperately wants to keep what happened there a secret. I thought atem fit the theme pretty well.
with that said, tkb being the orphan of kos lines up. but I still want to keep the yamiba and tkb connection, so Im on the fence on what I want to do with their true identities.
for gameplay reasons, everyone else in bloodborne is taller than the player character. so in this au, please imagine ryou (and bakura since hes borrowed ryous looks) as being towered over by everyone 🤭 to me, its because hes an outsider/yharnam natives are just giants like that. also watch this.
Another short one tonight because we celebrated my little brother turning thirteen after I’d been at work AND at my sort-of volunteer job leading music at my church’s informal Saturday night service, so I’ve had a very long day on four hours of sleep and am basically watching movies to keep myself awake while I draw (it’s the only thing that works anymore)
Anyway the premise here is one that slapped me upside the head while contemplating #Yami no Oniichan: An alternate Amane Lives AU where both siblings are alive, but Amane is also Kisara’s reincarnate.
Whether or not this is actually Blueshipping is up to whomever decides to run with it (personally I’d almost just slash her with Serenity just to be ornery, and this is keeping in mind I’m an unrepentant Silentshipper.)
