Today we come together with our Mission des Nations Unies au Mali - MINUSMA to pay tribute to the sacrifice of Captain Massamaesso Tangaou, our United Nations peacekeeper from Togo killed last week during the attack to the MINUSMA camp in Douentza.
A life largely dedicated to peacekeeping, Captain Tangaou served in UN peace operations in Côte d'Ivoire, the Central African Republic, and Chad, before joining our UN peacekeeping mission in Mali.
The farewell ceremony was held this morning at the Mission’s headquarters in Bamako, and attended by the Head of MINUSMA, Mahamat Saleh Annadif, the Malian Minister of Homeland Security, Gen. Salif Traoré, MINUSMA’s Force Commander, Maj. Gen. Jean-Paul Deconinck, along with the Mission’s personnel and fellow UN peacekeepers.
“The best way for us to honor the memory of our companion is to pursue the cause for which he sacrificed himself with more courage and determination. MINUSMA will continue to fulfill its mission and mandate,” said Mr. Annadif, extending condolences from the Mission and the whole United Nations family to the Captain’s wife and their three children.
