"Against All Odds": Schalke 04 Esports Doku kommt am Freitag
Dezember 2020 erscheinen.

This 2004 Lifetime movie tells the incredible true story of the Morgan twins, born to a tenacious mama-bear named Corrine. Diagnosed in childhood as each possessing autistic traits and displaying abnormal communication patterns, the boys were given labels instead of hope. Corrine, blindsided by the doctor's observations, is steadfast in her decision not to institutionalize her children. Philip and Steven make great strides under the care of a wonderful at-home occupational therapist, and eventually find a groove in their mainstream high school, each developing an interest in 'normal' extra-curriculars that they can be proud of. Steven begins running cross-country and Phillip takes up the guitar; activities that give each of them an emotional outlet that requires little verbalization and independent identities in the social landscape.
MIRACLE RUN stars Mary-Louise Parker as Corrine Morgan-Thomas, Zac Efron and Bubba Lews as (fraternal) twins Steven and Phillip, and Aidan Quinn as their step-dad, Doug Thomas. Parker is careful in her performance of the determined mother, candidly showing the struggle families face in trying to balance the needs of the child (or here, children) versus the good of the family unit. [It is not addressed in the film, but Morgan-Thomas in fact had two other children to care for whilst crusading for her special-needs twins.] It's as if Corrine's whole objective in finding a great program and supportive educators for her children, without telling the administrators about their autism, is because she doesn't want people to react angrily or skeptically as she did initially. She also, obviously, doesn't want to add any stress to the boy's already precarious confidences. Young Zac Efron, known best for three-peat appearances in the campy Disney HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL films, stuns in his nuanced portrayal of the sensitive distance-runner Steven. As a fan of his from early on, this is the role I hold highest. At just 17, Efron manages a sincere effort that the audience connects with, without giving an inflated sense of the condition; his choices for this character, influenced by much pre-production research, I'm sure, never ventures into the 'cartoonish' haze so many other autistic characters have. Co-star Bubba Lewis is also outstanding. Where Efron frequently employs an expression of bewilderment, Lewis is stoic. He opts to mirror the emotional void or lapses in communication often found in individuals with autism by maintaining a flat affect. Even so, Phillip is a character to root for, standing firm as an ally and a friend to his brother despite his own fears and challenges at school.
This movie stands out among a colossal catalog of TV movies made by the Lifetime network, both for the incredible heart that translates from the real-life family, and for the remarkable cast. On the surface MIRACLE RUN is a story about how one family copes with autism, but at its core serves as a commentary of the resilience of the human spirit.
