Opinion: I don’t think we need to “kill” in order to discipline.
The Philippine Presidential Election is happening tomorrow, and as a last hurrah from the endless debates we’ve been having for several months, this will be my last, and posted opinion.
I am not pro-Duterte, nor am I anti-Duterte either. I just simply think that killing criminals on the spot is inhuman and unfair. Yes, they have broken the law and strayed from the path of righteousness. Yes, they deserve to be punished, some even killed for the things they have done. But let’s put you in their shoes. Let’s say you have stolen something as small as bread, a coin purse, a phone, a bag, etc. And then you got killed. I know that stealing is bad, but something as small as those can be “forgiven”, right? By forgiven of course I mean years spent in jail, not letting the criminals run amok.
I too have been stolen from, and I know how the Filipinos’ hatred for snatchers boils in their blood. I know how that feels, I really do. I wanted that snatcher killed after what he has done to me, but the law is above is, we cannot escape it.
Aside from snatchers, there are the drug dealers and pushers. Now these are the people who deserve to be shot on spot for ruining the lives of others, right? But let’s think about it again, others just sell the substance for the money. Others do it because it’s fast money; maybe they have to provide for their families, you never know. Due process people, they deserve it.
But...I believe that those who deserved to be shot on the spot are our corrupt government officials who steal from our people. They hinder our country from progressing. They hinder it from what it could be. They keep the country stagnant and behind. They deserve to be gone from this nation if they ran for a position only to take from us, not contribute to its greatness.
But my main point is, the law is the law and we have to abide by it. To whoever the next president is, I wish you all the best in running this country and I pray you bring this country to greatness and the future.
I believe that it is still through education that we can eradicate crime, and the few ignorant Filipinos who still do crime. We should teach them. And by having educated citizens, corruption may also be lessened.
God bless the Philippines, God bless us!
To years of peace, prosperity, and greatness.
