He's been gone, doing something that only Dumbledore knows, something that brings him home with new scars and worn, tattered clothes. A vital mission for the Order of the Phoenix. At least, that was the story.

Or is it how Wormtail tells it? That they couldn't trust him? That Moony was the spy, giving the other side secret information that had lead to the loss of countless innocent lives? Sirius couldn't stomach the thought, his gut churning as his brain tried to puzzle it out.

The harrowing thing about it all? Wormtail might be right.
