When you discuss your experience with transphobia and someone tries to shut you down by saying, “you’re misgendering yourself,” they are an unserious shit-stirrer working against trans liberation. Always. Misgendering is a core component of transphobia. Transphobes will wield female stereotypes against trans men and male stereotypes against trans women. It is vital to trans liberation to discuss this. The discussion will not affirm our genders. We have to have it anyway.
Anyone who says “you’re misgendering yourself” is driving wedges in the trans community. block them, do not engage.
you know what's actually worse than misgendering yourself around the people you aren't out to? accidentally misgendering yourself mid sentence and choking on your words and feeling that sick churning in your gut
.
I think something that is really not talked about a lot is getting used to a new name and pronouns. When you are used to being called your birth name your entire life it can be hard to adjust to all this. This doesn't make you "less trans" or whatever. It is just what you are used to. I would suggest (for what it is worth) practicing it to yourself whenever you have the chance. I am kind of stuck on waiting mode right now (please don't ask), and I've been using my name wherever I go on the internet. It has helped with my dysphoria and just getting used to it.
