calling them craneflies because that sounds like it would be related to a crane somehow, unlike with fruit flies, which just describe the behaviour and doesnt give them a totally misleading name. yes, fruit flies are called that because they were observed to be attracted to fruit. craneflies are not. they are not at all related to cranes, just because they have long legs. more names should sound like the thing is related to its namesake, change my mind
