Current Music Obsessions: April 16 - 30, 2018
There were a lot of great jams released in April and quite a few of them are on this list. But before we get into those main obsessions, let's see the honorable mentions.
Aeonian Sorrow - Ave End Navarone - Loud and Clear Null Positiv - Koma Thy Symphony - Where Land Begs for the Sun Alexandra Martin - Our Day is Done Eleine - Another Rite Tremonti - A Dying Machine Deadspace - Mouth of Scorpions Disconnected - White Colossus Caliban - I Am Fear Stevie Nicks - Seven Wonders Admiribilis - Back Where I Belong Defecto - Nemesis Eleine - Please Orbit Culture - Way of the Masses Sanguine Glacialis - Aenigma Whyzdom - The Page Realm of Glass - Reveries from the Haunted Catalepsia - Par Velu Seventh Wonder - Victorious Lyria - The Rain Follow the Cipher - Carolus Rex Dyonisis - Arachne's Song
And here are those wonderful jams.
1) Miss FD - Vagaries
Transcendence is wonderful album that reminded me how much I enjoy industrial/darkwave. This song is definitely one of my favorites off it. It has a bit of a haunting vibe to it and has such a beautiful flow.
2) Aeonian Sorrow - Under the Light
This song. Yes. If you're a fan of gothic doom metal bands like Draconian and Amederia, check these guys out. Gogo's voice is so gorgeous and absolutely haunting. They really blew it out of the park with their debut album. This song is such a powerful song that invokes so much emotion. Definitely my favorite off the album.
3) Collibus - What We've All Become
This is probably the fastest and most in your face tracks on the album and is such a great way to open it. I knew this band could pack a punch, but this track is on a different level. Gemma's voice is so strong and doesn't give up in the slightest throughout this track.
End of the Line
This is probably my favorite off the album. It's so beautiful. It starts out rather slow and a bit soft, but then half way through, it kicks into high gear and speeds the fuck up. That's what makes this such a stand out on the album for me.
4) Tesseract - King
This was the first song I heard off Sonder and it's a pretty epic track. I LOVE that for a djent band that they have such an atmospheric sound. Even their more aggressive tracks still have that atmospheric vibe to it, and that's exactly what this song has. It even gets to sounding a bit sludgy at times and I'm totally here for it.
5) Alexandra Martin - Dreamers of the World
I'm so happy that she finally dropped a solo album. It's a wonderful album. Same writing style and vibe that her era with Adastreia had, but has orchestral music as the instrumentals instead of gothic metal. Definitely a big fan of this track. It has such a great vibe to it that can instantly lift your mood. And the vocal lines. The vocal lines are so wonderful and unique. Love it.
6) The Project Hate MCMXCIX - Iesus Nazarenus, Servus Mei
I got into this ballbuster of a track thanks to Ruby sharing it on Facebook one day. She's the female singer featured on the album this song is off of and is actually how I discovered these guys. I haven't dabbled too much into them, but I haven't heard a bad song from them yet. This song is just a non-stop assault from start to finish and Ruby's voice packs an incredible punch as it always does.
7) Lyria - Hard to Believe
This is hands down my favorite song off the album. It's the most powerful and dramatic, and we all know how I feel about dramatic music. The more, the better. My favorite part has to be the exit when the choirs kick in. They add such an intense vibe that just haunts you.
8) Sanguine Glacialis - Missa De Angelis
After hearing Monsters, I had to hear more from them. I'm so glad I made the decision to listen to this album, because it's an INSANE ride from start to finish. This track is probably the most versatile on the album and really shows their front woman's vocal talents and range. She hits some pretty impressive high notes and her screams are monstrous as ever.
9) Whyzdom - Fly Away
Fun fact: Marry is their first front woman to be featured on two albums in a row. Now that we have that out of the way, this song is sick. The chorus is such a powerhouse and serves as a reminder as to just how epic and unique they are. They've always been one of the more unique bands in the symphonic metal scene. Whoever writes their music is a genius at creating unique and powerful stuff like this.
10) Eleine - From the Grave
Until the End is such an epic album. These guys give some much needed fresh air to the symphonic gothic metal scene with their unique approach to it. One of the reasons why I obsess over this track in particular is the xylophone bits in the verses. They're my weakness in symphonic metal. This song is such an epic and powerful one from start to finish. I really hope they come to the States one day, because I need to see them live. And hopefully Eleine will be rocking her "metal Cher" look when they do.
11) Orbit Culture - See Through Me
My favorite off the Redfrog EP. Without a doubt. This is such a powerful track. After hearing songs like Sun of All and Saw, I never once thought they would be capable of putting something this beautiful out. It's still a powerhouse of a track, but man it hits you with a bus of emotion.
12) Neverlight - Fractal
Randomly found this song on Facebook one day and decided to check it out. So glad I did. This is a proggy symphonic gothic metal band fROM THE STATES. It continues to blow my mind that more and more amazing symphonic metal bands have been coming out of this country in recent years. ANYWAYS, loving this track. It's full of energy and power and is a wee bit catchy, but nothing annoying.
13) Yuki Kajiura - The Battle is to the Strong
I'm currently on a bit of an anime binge and have been since after I watched the latest season of Santa Clarita Diet. I don't know why it triggered an anime binge since it's not an anime, but it did. Thanks to that I binged the whole Fate series on Netflix in the span of two weeks. This track is from Fate/Zero and it instantly grabbed my attention. Yuki Kajiura is an absolute goddess when it comes to anime soundtracks. This song is so simple, but it's so powerful and beautiful. It also was used whenever shit got real in the show, so it definitely gives you that vibe when you're just simply listening to it.
14) On Being Human - Ultraviolet
This is the second song I've heard from them and so far I'm really liking them. I really love the video for it. I love the colorful lights. The song is a fun rock song that has a nice electronic element to it. And I LOVE the little moany grunty thing he does during the second verse. So much yes to that.
15) Phantom Elite - Revelation
One of my favorites off their debut album, Wasteland. This is definitely the most dramatic song off it and is exactly why love it. It packs such an insane punch and was exactly what I was waiting for on this album. Marina doesn't get too theatrical with her voice on this album like she did on Rhapsodies in Black from Exit Eden, which is very refreshing, but mama loves her some drama, and homegirl brought it on this track.
16) My Indigo - Star Crossed Lovers
This track is everything. Every song off their debut album is everything, but we're focusing on this song right now. It's so lovely and so great to just chill to. The chorus is absolutely everything with those harmonies. It'll have you randomly singing "star crossed lovers high" for days. Love it. Sharon den Adel blew this album out of the water.
17) Trillium - Time to Shine
Here we have another lady from Exit Eden, Amanda Somerville. I've been looking forward to follow up to Alloy for so long and this is their first single off the upcoming album, Tectonic. It's definitely a great track to be a single. Packs a lot of power, but I wish they would've chosen a track that showed more of Amanda's vocal talents to be the first single, but they did that with their debut single, Coward, to get people interested. Now that we know what to expect from them, it makes sense to drop something that shows her powerful cleans instead of something that shows a little bit of everything. ANYWAYS, the song is an epic track and the video is lovely.
I'm looking forward to what new jams are to come in May. I'll say this much, there's probably gonna be a lot of Eurovision songs coming up, so prepare for that.
