He swung down from the lamppost, landing in a crouch at her feet. Behind him, the smoldering shell of the building lay empty, its inhabitants safely evacuated. Another successful day’s work, he thought. He could see the headlines now: Spidey Swings By, Saves the Day, Again. As always. We expect nothing less of New York’s most dashing, young, comedically-gifted spider-themed hero.

Of course, that implied the Bugle wasn’t actively running another smear campaign against him, which was never a sure bet.

Peter stood up and faced the woman. Had she seen him dash out of the crowd at the first sign of flames, duck into an alley, and reemerge in spandex? Did she know?

No. No way. He was too good at this. He’d had years of practice. He was fine. One of these days, he’d stop worrying about witnesses, but, apparently, today wasn’t that day.

So he smiled under the mask, a self-satisfied smirk that he knew she couldn’t see, and extended a slightly-charred, gloved hand. “The name’s -Man,” he said. “Spider-Man.”
