Davrin Week Day 6: Legacy
@datvcompanionweeks @zombiefishgirl (thank u for Misuin, Inaean, and Midha) I'm not crying, you're crying
Davrin let out a long groan as he stood straight, the muscles in his lower back protesting.
“Careful there old man,” Ruby giggled.
“You’re no spring chicken yourself,” he chuckled, kissing the greying roots at her hair.
“It’s terribly rude to comment on a lady’s age,” she gasped in mock horror.
“You started it,” he reminded her, pulling her close. “Besides. I don’t mind how old you are. You’re gorgeous.”
“Thank you mi amor,” she purred, kissing him slowly. They pull apart at the sound of footsteps.
“Grandmamae!” Inaean called, the dark haired six year old rushing to hug his grandmother. Ruby grinned, crouching to hug him.
A moment later Ivy, Misuin, and Midha came around the corner. Midha held a carved halla in her hand and scurried over to Davrin.
“Hello sweetheart,” Davrin smiled, kissing the four year old’s dark red hair. He smiled up at Ivy, trying to hide the wince of pain in his back. Ivy frowned nontheless, hugging him.
“You doing okay Papae?” She murmured.
“I’m just fine Ivy,” he chuckled.
With hellos said, Davrin led his family into their cottage, letting Ruby help Misuin and Ivy unpack as he sat in a massive armchair, Inaean and Midha eagerly climbing into his lap.
“Where’s Assan?” his granddaughter asked, dark brown eyes sparkling with innocence and excitement.
“He’s around here somewhere,” Davrin chuckled. “Likely out catching lunch for himself. We’ll go for a ride when he gets back, alright?”
Midha giggled delightedly, still cuddling her halla toy in her arms. Davrin remembered carving it for Ivy when she was little. The toy was worn on the edges but was still in good shape, a fact Davrin took great pride in.
Inaean begged for a story about the darkspawn. Davrin obliged, softening some of the bloodier parts of his and Ruby’s first battle with an ogre. To Inaean, the creatures of death and nightmares were just that. A nightmare, a scary story. It made Davrin want to weep that his grandchildren were growing up in a world without darkspawn or the threat of Blights.
He entertained his grandchildren until Assan’s triumphant cry rang through the forest. His grandchildren were off like arrows, cheering as they hugged the now massive griffon. His companion looked annoyingly young and healthy still. Davrin wondered how long a griffon could live on its own.
Assan took the three on a lazy ride through the sky, chirping happily as the grandchildren giggled and screamed in delight. When they landed, Inaean and Midha took off to play with Ruby and Davrin leaned against his companion.
“Look at them,” he murmured, stroking Assan’s soft feathers. “They’ll never know the world we grew up in.”
Assan cooed softly, nuzzling his large head against Davrin’s torso.
“I’m happy for them,” he replied. “You’ll look after them won’t you?”
Assan’s bright eyes looked sad even as he chirped in agreement.
“I have a feeling you’ll outlive me boy. You don’t have the Blight in your veins. Keep them safe, okay?” He murmured, resting his forehead against Assan’s for a moment. Assan cooed and the two stood silently before Midha rushed over, tugging on his hand.
“Mamae said we can go see the griffons if you say its okay!” She grinned. “Can we? Please please please?”
“Of course sweetheart. Let’s go,” he smiled, leading his family towards the griffons’ clearing.
