If you go back to April 2015 you should find a cyber!Astrid fanart and with it the tag to the cyber!Astrid AU of hers :)
Found it! Thank you!
miti-sweets replied to your post “still haven’t decided whether or not i want to do nanowrimo and it’s...”
Why not just bend the nanowrimo rules slightly and just set your goal to writing whatever you want to and not necessarily a completely new thing while setting everything else aside. That's what I'm gonna do and the official website also has a badge specifically for the nano rebels :)
eh, that’s probably a good idea. It would be good to finally get Everything I Want done :)

(1)Hey, in my art class our teacher choose for us to paint in the style of Miro next and some of us (me right on the front) started arguing against it because it just isn't our style at all. So it got me thinking somehow about HTTYD.
(2)What do you think would be Hiccups prefered art style in a modern universe? Would he be an abstract kinda guy or be more into naturalism? I’m also curious as to what you prefer.^^
Art question!!! This is really cool. I have some friends who have majored and studied the fine arts in college, and I’m always blown away by what they know and what they can do. The more I think about it, the more amazed I am. I am not an art expert by any means (well… except music) but it is something I celebrate and embrace. So hopefully I don’t say something inaccurate in this whole discussion since I know less about art than most of my friends. XD
So the word “modern” is an obnoxious word when it comes to the arts - be it music or painting - because lots of people use the word “modern” casually to mean contemporary or present-day, but “modern art” is a period from roughly 1860 to 1960. Since you’re going through studying Miro, who is a legitimate modern artist, I’m assuming you might mean the word “modern” in that sense! But I also sort of want to talk about Hiccup in both senses… as a modern artist and as a contemporary one.
So first… modern art.
As far as Hiccup appreciating art is concerned, I imagine that because he is a very innovative individual, he will find fascination with those artists blazing the trail with the newest art styles and visual innovations. He will look curiously at the abstract pieces being produced during the modernist times. I can especially see him finding some good ideas behind Expressionism and the methods they use to paint emotion… albeit he’s going to be someone who prefers paintings and sketches portraying more optimistic human emotions. Hiccup is no cynic and he looks at life with a very idealistic framework. He will also appreciate good naturalism, of course; that takes great skill, after all. But he will embrace the abstract, too, far more than most anyone else around him. Hiccup can understand and appreciate creativity and innovation.
Now as far as Hiccup producing art is concerned, I would say he shows far more naturalism than abstract influences. When we see Hiccup in Berk, he is using art for practical purposes beyond expressing himself… he works to impart knowledge (in the Book of Dragons) or to design a three-dimensional object. Hiccup uses art as a mechanism for engineering new inventions. So Hiccup’s innovation in his art comes at the stage of taking his sketches and constructing something out of them in the shop.
So what we see Hiccup sketch on paper or paint with a brush is not going to be abstract. It will be naturalistic when he is attempting to improve his two-dimensional art abilities. It will be planning and sketches when he wants to build a new invention. His two-dimensional art will be realism more than abstract.
But where I think we catch Hiccup is in the three-dimensional. If Hiccup is someone who creates art in any abstract modernist fashion, it’s going to be there. And I think that Hiccup would find a very cheerful niche with the kinetic art movement… with a twist. Hiccup would use kinetic art not to be skeptical about the advances of technology, like many artists were for this movement… he’d use kinetic art to show something more optimistic!
In a present-day setting, I imagine Hiccup’s art is all digital. He’s a technological guy, after all. But there are so many ways digital art can go that it’s hard to say what he’d do. I think Hiccup is someone who would know anatomy down cold and be able to depict things very realistically, but not ever depict it in a photorealistic sense. He’s created his own personal style that is the tiniest bit whimsical. It’s the sort of art that would make peoples’ lips move up in a little bit of a smile.
Now… last… my art style preferences (since you were curious). I am someone who does not emotionally gravitate toward abstract art as much as realism; growing up, I learned realism and how to imitate what I saw rather than spin my own flair to my visuals. Realism takes me into landscapes and events that I can taste, feel, and touch. I like that. So I love naturalism since it’s got that realism. It’s what’s ingrained in my head. Naturalism is what I would go to when I want to think and imagine and see new places.
But here’s the thing: I really, really respect all styles of art and will look at abstract art with great curiosity. I look at abstract art for different reasons than I do something with more realism. Abstract art is what I go to when I want to chew on an art piece and think and philosophize. It’s what I go to when I want a good, intellectual evening. I don’t do it as often, but when I do want to, I study the art with more depth and debate.
That is, incidentally, also how I interact with music. My music compositions span a wide variety from very tonal ear worms to colorful but consonant floating landscapes to more abstract, gritty, and rough atonal works. When I listen casually to music and want to have a good time, I enjoy myself some good alternative rock and metal music (bands like Red, Falling Up, Nightwish, Secret and Whisper, Family Force 5) or common period classical music like Beethoven, Schubert, and Rimsky-Korsakov. But when I want to sit down and study and focus on music with all of my being, I’m going to go much, much, much more abstract. When I studied at the music school, most of my respected colleagues composed some very abstract works. And I loved them. So when I go to the concert hall for an evening of deep music, I want to hear all the contemporary classical pieces that go beyond tonality. Tonal music can unfortunately get really boring really quickly to me because it’s often very predictable; it’s why I find no taste in 95% of movie soundtracks.
So yeah. That’s my answer. And again I apologize if I got some terminology or history or anything wrong whatsoever; people are always free to correct and educate me so I can learn something cool. Thanks again for this really intriguing question!
