January 16, 2015 - Mitred Parakeet or Mitred Conure (Aratinga mitrata)
Native to Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina, these parrots have been introduced to parts of California, Florida, and New York City. Like many parrot species, they eat seeds, nuts, and fruits. Often traveling in small flocks, they gather into larger flocks of hundreds or even thousands when breeding or roosting. There are at least 4 subspecies of Mitred Parakeet, each with slight color variations.
This piece was inspired by Zach, a Mitred Parakeet I visited recently.
Red-Masked (Mitred, Scarlet-Fronted, Cherry-head) Conure appreciation post. I love all birds, but I take a shine to these guys. They are smart, fun, rolly-polly, cuddling, clowns. I swear Pako was a human in a bird's body. He was the boss. You can't have dinner without him. You can't have people over without him wanting to welcome them with a kiss. Clifford sang when he ate, would snuggle in a blankey, greet me every day with adorable antics. Georgie came from a very rough life and blossomed into another snuggle buddy with his repertoire of funny phrases, of which were passed on to Mikey then Piko. And Piko, who's like Velcro to me. Somersaults from my shoulders to my chest. Cracks me up with his birdy-rants, and refuses to let me leave the bird room without flying on my head. He will not take a bath. He will take a shower on my arm and I will get drenched in the process, but we have fun. My other conures have funny stories too, but you don't get to see the red-heads as much because they're not as colorful or fancy. Their personalities have so much potential. When you go to a bird rescue, take note of them. And don't get an animal because "Oh it's pretty." wait and feel the bond happening.
Mitred Conures are goofy, love-bugs that love to give kisses..! Not as fancifully colored, but their personalities can be top notch.
This guy makes me miss Pako so much. He had that same silly personality and was nothing but love.
