We are sunset-deprived in my neighborhood because of the hills to the west—the sun disappears behind those hills long before anything interesting happens, sunset-wise. I do have a great sunrise view, if only I was ever awake for it. There’s a spot at my end of Washington Park where you at least get a glimpse of a dramatic sunset sky between the trees, and people do stop to admire it. So I went out last week and bought myself ALL THE CRAYONS. That’s right, the whole entire 84 set of @carandache Neocolor II, the water-soluble ones. They’re magical because you can scribble on top of anything, even light over dark (well, within reason), you can lay down thick juicy blobs of color, you can water it down and whoosh it around or even lift it back up entirely, for crying out loud, and it works great over watercolor or gouache. So then I also got out one of my big ole pieces of paper (which I’d been saving for what, exactly?) and I’ve just been going to town on this landscape. It’s so great because I can just leave it sitting out, walk over and scribble on it a bit, wash some water over a few things, and walk away again. I’ve been at this one for a week. Who knows when I’ll be done? For a long time I just couldn’t figure out what to do with a landscape. What do I have to say about it? How do I make it my own? Finally I stumbled into this way of working in mixed media—gouache or watercolor, plus some colored pencil, ink, marker, whatever. I loved making lots of scribbly lines and textures and little random marks. It feels very immediate and handmade and it doesn’t look like a copy of a landscape—it looks like something I made in response to a landscape.
