WIP Wednesday (late)

I was tagged by the wonderful @paintedscales and the marvellous @amalthea-felsblood Thank you both!!

A battle does not end so quickly no matter of skill.  Despite the battle lasting several hours before the Amalj’aa retreated, Mizuki kept the barrier up the entire time.

“Mizuki, the battle is ours!” Cocobygo called but Mizuki did not move. The brothers looked up at the shield that rippled in the setting sun and they hurried over to her.

“Mizuki-” Cocobani peered around her and screeched “Brothers we must help! Mizuki she-” they gathered before her and gasped, Mizuki stared past them onto the battlefield, unblinking, her breath heavy and blood streaming down her face.  Her staff had splintered into crystals several of which had pierced her hands. 

“We need to get her out of the aether stream!” Cocobuki shouted, trying to calm his brothers.

mizuki never got annoyed when nazu looked at her test paper during exams.

mostly because she knew nazu wasn't cheating.

she was just looking.

according to mizuki:

"you're not even copying anything."

according to nazu:

"i know."

most of the time, nazu would stare at an answer for a few seconds, look away, and continue with her own test.

then, after the exam ended:

"why did you answer that question like that?"

mizuki would explain.

nazu would listen carefully.

and then immediately realize she got it wrong.

according to nazu:

"oh."

"...i was wrong."

for almost two years, nazu and mizuki ended up in the same class.

then came third year.

different classrooms.

different homerooms.

different seats.

according to the teacher:

"looks like you're separated from your best friend this year."

according to nazu:

"i think this was done on purpose."

according to everyone else:

"it wasn't."

nazu loves sweet food a little too much.

sometimes she has to hide from mizuki just so she can eat sugary snacks in peace.

otherwise, she'd end up listening to the same lecture for the fifth time that week.

according to mizuki:

"your body is not made of sugar."

according to nazu:

"not with that attitude."

one day, nazu became strangely curious about something.

according to nazu, mizuki wasn't particularly feminine.

but she wasn't exactly a tomboy either.

so naturally, nazu asked:

"mizu, do you have a mirror in your room?"

mizuki replied:

"yeah."

"an A5-sized folding mirror."

there was a brief pause.

then nazu responded:

"oh."

"so you do have a mirror."

"for a second i thought you didn't."

according to mizuki:

"what kind of conclusion is that?"

during middle school, there was a lunch break when mizuki talked about her father.

it wasn't the first time she'd mentioned him.

but it was the first time nazu saw her cry.

not sobbing.

just a few quiet tears.

and somehow, that felt worse.

according to nazu:

"i didn't know what to do."

so she stayed.

she sat beside mizuki and listened.

she didn't tell her to stop crying.

she didn't tell her everything would be okay.

instead, she let mizuki be sad for a while.

then, little by little, she helped her look at things from a different perspective.

a gentler one.

a kinder one.

and eventually, without mizuki even realizing it, the conversation drifted somewhere lighter.

years later, mizuki would describe the experience as:

"free therapy."

mizuki is surprisingly protective of nazu.

sometimes more protective than nazu herself.

if someone makes nazu uncomfortable, mizuki will remember.

for a very long time.

according to mizuki:

"i don't like him."

according to nazu:

"who?"

there was even a time when nazu had a crush on someone.

a boy eventually approached mizuki to talk about it.

the conversation lasted less than a minute.

mizuki responded with a middle finger, the most offended expression imaginable, and walked away.

then she immediately went to the cafeteria to have lunch with nazu.

nazu, meanwhile, was happily eating and had absolutely no idea what had just happened.

according to nazu:

"why are you staring at me?"

according to mizuki:

"nothing."

years later, mizuki admitted that she never thought he was a good match for nazu.

according to mizuki:

"you would've cried."

according to nazu:

"that's a terrible reason."

according to mizuki:

"and yet i was right."
