New in the Digital Library: A Must-Read for Mizzou Alumni
What's the one piece of Mizzou history all alumni should know? It's the tragic and dramatic story of how we ended up with the Columns on the University of Missouri quad. They're all that's left of Academic Hall, which burned down in January 1892. Academic Hall housed most of the university at that time, and almost all of its contents - including the library* - were lost in the fire.
An eyewitness account by George Armstrong Wauchope (an English professor who also authored the University of Missouri's alma mater) details the events of the fire, and how the students, faculty, and citizens of Columbia banded together to keep the university open. Our Digital Services unit just added it to the MU Digital Library, so now it's available to everyone!
*A single book survived, and you can read its story on the Special Collections blog.
