Only Rocketships
Chapter 1
Tim grit his teeth in annoyance, maneuvering his way around the mass of people dressed in extravagant costumes holding fancy wine glasses, slightly tipsy, laughs as fake as chalcopyrite posing as gold. He ducked as a man swung his arm out, so in the midst of his story telling that he hadn't even noticed him. He grumbled as his eyes landed on his parents, Jake Drake and Janet Drake, who were hosting this meaningless party. They were smiling brightly, Janet hooked on Jake’s arm, seemingly making a toast. Probably to some charity that was taking most of the funds for themselves, trickling just enough into actual donations that it was never questioned. Not that anyone ever questioned it anyhow.
Tim sidestepped a man and his wife, too busy sucking face to discern him there, and then darted for the door. He slipped behind a pillar as one of the caterers brought out another plate of food, a large man who seemed to always wear a bright smile. He and his fiance owned a small bakery nearby and while his parents usually only went for the very best and very pricey foods, apparently their new business had already earned a pleasant reputation that caught their eye.
Once he was far enough, Tim sprinted over to the window, opening it quickly and jumping up onto the window pane. He looked back at the party, giving it a once over. No one could see him here, this was a darker corner of the room that wasn’t being used for the party. He wondered for a very brief moment if his parents would even notice if he was gone but that thought was shook off very quickly. Of course they wouldn’t.
With his mind made up, he lept from the window frame into the dirt below, still moist from the recent rain. The mud splattered onto the wall and the bottom of his black pants. Was it necesary? No, but he would enjoy his temporary freedom to the fullest. He turned around and pushed closed the windows before climbing through the neatly trimmed plants to the driveway. He smiled and began jogging away from the stuffy party, getting farther from the light washing in from the gala replaced with only the shine from the full moon. He found a great appreciation for how it bathed everything in shadows; it gave way to the Halloween spirit.
He made it to a park that was not too far from the city while not unreasonably disanced from the manor. He enjoyed the light breeze that made the branches of the trees sway and his cape flutter behind him. Like Batman’s cape. He wondered over to the swings, abandoned. Kind of like he is. While technically he did have a family, they weren’t really one. They didn’t really care for him; he was simply a show pony to exhibit and earn the crowds approval and love. Brandish a cute kid about and thats sure to gain some more donations and attention.
The swing creaked under his weight. They were old clear, rust running up the metal like ivy up a wall. He barley weighed anything so the quality clear was bad enough to need replacing. Not that that would ever happen. No one had come to this particular playground after the Joker had attacked it three months ago. A death total of twenty. Almost all of them were kids. Tim’s hands tightened around the chain, anger coursing through him at the thought that anyone would dare attack such an innocent group. Tim sighed and swung his feet forward while tipping his body back, letting the swing come forward a bit before falling back, his body following the motion, feet coming to bend beneath the seat of the swing while his body leant forward so the swing went back. A small rush of wind gusted his face with each motion. It was a nice night to be out, cool and only slightly moist.
He closed his eyes and imagined what it would be like to run across rooftops, the feel of the wind bitter on his cheeks, flipping over gaps between each building, his feet landing softly on each roof, and at his side, a large black figure stood.
His eyes snapped open as something fell to the ground. They flickered over to the small play area, not seeing anything. He wasn’t foolish enough to think himself safe though. He stopped swinging his feet, the creak of each movement back and forth seemed much louder now causing him to wince, attempting to drag his feet on the ground to fully stop.
He sucked in a breath and then called, “Who’s there?”
He waited a moment, no sound was made. His swing had about stopped by now and he was ready to dart at any given moment.
“Who’s there?” His voice was more firm this time.
He got up off the swing and stepped back, about to just leave. It would be better to be alive then to risk a fight with whatever had made that noise.
“Hello,” a small voice came.
He looked around, eyes trailing everywhere looking for the source until they landed on a small form leaping down from the playground. He stepped back, not sure if it were a threat or not but the second it came out from the shadows into the moonlight he had a feeling it be ok.
“Hello?” Tim said as a little girl wearing a sheep costume approached him.
“My, what big teeth you have,” she smiled brightly as she approached, if not somewhat shy.
Tim’s mouth quirked up, “don’t think that’s the right line for either of our costumes.”
She shrugged, “suited your fangs.”
“What are you doing here? Don’t you know this park is dangerous?”
“Could ask you the same question,” she sniffed, sticking her tongue out at him.
He felt a smile tug at his lips as he looked down at her, “touché. But seriously, this place is dangerous.”
She shrugged and walked past him, sitting on the swing he had previously occupied and began to swing her legs.
“Guess you better leave then.”
Tim chuckled this time and went to sit on the swing next to her, “yeah, maybe I should. But if your staying guess I can too.”
She grinned, “yeah?”
Tim smiled back at her, “course, not like I have anything better to do.”
She tilted her head as she peered at him, “why do you have sticks in your hair?”
Tim blinked and ran a hand through his hair, surprised when he did find a twig. He flicked it to the ground.
“Maybe I live on the streets.”
“Nu uh. Only rich people are dressed up today. For that fancy party.”
“Is that so? Then why are you dressed up?”
She looked down at her feet, she had stopped swinging, feet dangling above the ground, “a nice lady gave me the outfit and let me help her. I served some food for some money. But one of the other servers kicked me out.”
“Oh…are you..” he trailed off not sure how to ask.
“Yeah.”
“I’m Tim.”
She looked to him, a bit shocked that he was still interacting with her, “Marinette. I’m Marinette.”
“Nice to meet you,” he smiled brightly.
She tilted her head slightly and returned his smile, “Nice to meet you too Tim. I hope we can be good friends.”
“Yeah. Great friends.”
I don’t have time to do anything else on my fic so here’s a little random bit @izanae inspired for it. This would take place just before Only Rocketships starts.
Tim sees a woman in a costume all too revealing and silently judges her. What did she think this was? You do not come to a formal costumed gala dressed like a badazzeled rabbit. He rolled his eyes and ducked under the swinging arm of one of the guests who had a little too much to drink, same as his wife, and continued on with his mission.
