so lily + marlene are very similar. both grew up poor, catholic, and with complicated relationships with their mothers. they both deal with these issues differently - marlene is loud and confident, in an attempt to shield herself from her own insecurity of being broken and not good enough, to either god or her mother or both. lily is stubbornly hardworking, to try to prove herself as worthy, and not as a freak.

they are best friends at hogwarts, with mary, but when they get to around 5th year and mary sort of ditches them for her new boyfriends, they both feel ‘left behind’ in a way.

marlene knows, deep down, that she’s gay, and she’s known since she was a child, but is terrified to admit it, because it’s sinful, and would prove her mother right - she’s broken. she knows she loves lily differently than she loves mary, and she always has.

lily is clueless for the most part, but feels uncomfortable that she’s never had a real crush on a guy even though she’s supposed to - even in the wizarding world, she’s a freak. she also knows that her eyes linger on marlene for far too long when she’s in her quidditch gear.

they experiment with sirius and remus respectively in 5th year, marlene deep in denial but lily just teetering on the edge. after christmas, marlene has had an argument with her mum and wants to stay with her dad that summer, who lives in liverpool, not too far from lily’s place.

they meet up a lot that summer, sneaking into clubs and just wandering around. they get a lot closer, and there’s always something unspoken that hangs in the air, but both are too scared to mess it up.

one night, when they’ve come back from the club, they’re both absolutely hammered, when lily starts complaining about james’ comstant courting efforts, when marlene says

“well, you can’t blame him for wanting you, who wouldn’t?”

it takes a minute to realise what she’s said, but before marlene can apologise lily is overwhelmed by that gryffindor courage, and just kisses her, like it’s the easiest thing in the world.

there’s so much more i could say, but this is how lilylene starts imo. plenty of angst in their relationship as it progresses, but they’re happy and get to live that dream summer together <33
