[2025-11-23 image ©GSMA] There is limited Electro-Magnetic Spectrum available radio transmissions and in particular wireless communications via WiFi or 5G. In the UK OfCOM have just released waves in the frequencies 26GHz and 40GHz. Whilst these mmWaves do provide extra resources to the mobile companies, they are not suitable for "general purpose" mobile broadband. The mobile companies have their eyes o the upper 6GHz waves. But there is a problem.
WiFi also uses waves in and around the same frequency at 2.5GHz, 5GHz and some at 6GHz. The WiFi companies also want the upper 6GHz waves. In Europe there is a fight brewing between the WiFi companies and the mobile operators which is replicated in the UK within OfCOM. Although there are plans to share the space it seems likely that this will not satisfy anyone. The German regulators seem to be comping down on the side of the mobile operators and that may be the winning position. The final statement will be delivered in mid 2027.
