Gary felt some pressure when he heard about this month’s evalution. He knew this moment would come someday, but actually he prefered for it to be later than now, since he still didn’t prepared for that. During the MGAs they had been interviewed before, but he hadn’t liked that situation. It wasn’t like Gary didn’t knew how to reply, he was good with words, but he tended to be too honest and knowing that there might be risky questions as well made him nervous. Honesty was one thing, but when he wanted to become a person of public, he needed to be strategic about the approach. Gary would need to answer cautiously.
He sat across from the mentor, after giving him a polite bow. The other man rustled with the paper stack in front of him, until he found Gary’s questions and nodded at him after taking a quick look. Before they were about to begin, he offered Gary a bottle of water, his eyes carefully watching the trainee. They were supposed to pretend they didn’t know each other, so the mentor asked him patiently:
“So please start off with a little introduction.”
Lifting his chin up a little, he bowed another time and greeted with confidence: “Yes, hello. This is KT’s rapper and songwriter Kang Gary, pleased to meet you.”
Q1. “So, Kang Gary-ssi... You wrote a lot of love songs. Did you had someone in mind, when you wrote them?”
His eyebrows furrowed at the first question. They just begun and he was immediately asked a rather hard question? If he wasn’t careful now, it might cause misunderstandings with the mentor he wanted to avoid as much as possible. “Well, I started to write songs when I was in my late teens, around the time I was in a relationship.” He honestly told the other, while looking straight into his eyes. “Our relationship lasted for 7 years until she broke up with me. Since I wanted to express everyday situations and feelings in my songs, I started to write down my thoughts after the break up. They helped me to cope with it and healed my heart.” He smiled. Honesty over a past relationship wouldn’t hurt him, right?
Q2. “Out of all your songs, which one would you recommend the most?”
The question makes his heart flutter, as he felt happy hearing someone was interested in his songs. “I am very serious, when it comes to songwriting. There are times I am rewriting lyrics over and over again without getting to any end. So every time I manage to create a song I feel comfortable with and feel like it’s complete I am very glad and happy. Which means that I would like to recommend all of my songs, but I am especially fond of ‘Pursuit of Happiness’. It’s about my journey towards happiness, and how I want to share the experience about the path of sacrifices I had to go until I came this far. As long as we are alive, we should do what we love and strive to be happy in any way, until death takes us away. Life is about not having regrets after missing a chance.”
Q3. “To Gary, music is…”
“An evil friend. Sometimes I hate music, especially when I feel there is something wrong or lacking but I can’t figure out what it is. This is what makes me crazy at times.” Leaning forward he let out a small sigh, tired, since he had faced those times more than just once. “But eventually I can’t help doing music, it’s my passion and my life. It’s something I can’t and won’t ever give up.” He shrugged his shoulders. It was hard to describe what about music kept him working even harder, but there was something in his heart about it he couldn’t help but follow.
Q4. “What are your wishes for your musical career in the future?”
Without hesitating he answered, as he had often thought about it before. “Well, I want to create music which reaches not just the ears but the hearts and souls of the listeners. I will be happy to know my music is worth, even when there are just a few people who are willing to listen carefully what I want to express. Overcoming language and cultural barriers are more important than full arena’s of so called fans who don’t understand my lyrics. “
Q5. “Beside music, does Kang Gary have interest in other areas? Which business do you want to try?”
He remained silent for a few seconds, holding in, as he thought about the question seriously. Then he opened his mouth with a smile: “Life is short. I think I would like to try acting and variety shows at some point, just to know how it feels like. Even though I believe there will be just a few roles I will be able to fit. In our society it’s by far easier to put everything and everyone into specific roles based by their appearance or behaviour, so I would love to do the things I want to without being judged.” Gary nodded, hands resting on his lap, as he replied. “Also, I am constantly dreaming about a fashion brand called “Halyang”, I would love to found.”
Q6. “Halyang? What’s the meaning of it?”
The male laughed, he had prepared himself for the question, since he had been asked about it a few times after writing the song ‘Halyang Dream’. “One time I went to a fortune teller, you know, when a new year begins. During that period of time I felt down pretty much, since I was rejected by every audition I participated in. If the fortune teller told me to give up on my dream, I would have seriously considered it...” Lost in thought, he halted and remembered the days back then, when no one was interested in what he got to say. The hardships of life were what had formed him to the man he was now. “The fortune teller told me that he can sense Halyang in me. Halyang is the traveling noble men from the olden days, that is to say even without working, one is able to enjoy life. So since then I am dreaming of enjoying life beyong any boundaries.”
