I watched the first three episodes of The Orville and it wasn’t so bad. Ok, sometimes the humor bugs me but there is a lot of potential. In the episode 1, I really hated Mercer, he was always complaining about his ex wife Kelly, he was very unprofessional. Even if he admitted he was wrong, I was still annoyed by him. The episode 2 was better, he was more tolerable and I really like the rest of the crew. I’m happy to see Penny Johnson Jerald, I really liked her in DS9 and I hope we’ll know more about her character, Claire Finn.
In the episode 3 we learn more about the Moclean culture: they are a single-gender species of men. Being born as a female is very uncommon and it’s considered as a illness : So Bortus and his mate Klyden want a gender reassignment surgery for their newborn daughter.
This event brings a very interesting topic about gender and some problematic about aliens culture. It wasn’t caricatural and I’m not saying it was perfect but I think the writers did their best to handle the gender issue.
This show deserves to have a chance.
