it's important to know that angie and kat's relationship has been strained ever since angel's father died. he looks at kat and her happy complete family and yearns for what he has lost. being 14 makes this experience no better and its doubly awful when you're dealing with the onset of depression and your friend is acting like you being sad is an inconvenience and you just need to "be a little happier". in fact, the only reason angel has an outburst at her in the first place is because she says something incredibly insensitive. that coupled with the past couple months of passive agressive remarks + his own issues with anger (that he feels he has to contain) tips him over. hes 12 years old experiencing his fathers death all over again. ironically trying to contain his anger and just shoulder the insensitive things kat says is a self fulfilling prophecy.
which is not to say that kat is some sort of terrible person (and neither is angie for that matter). shes simply 14 and she doesnt understand what her friend is going thru b/c shes lived a life without strife. she doesnt realize that shes making rude remarks. she wholeheartedly believes that angel just needs to move on and he'll be happy again. her ideas of recovery from mental illness are flawed b/c she doesnt understand what its like to be depressed or grieve. from her point of view, his dad died 2 years ago and he is still treating kat as if shes the cause of his fathers death. he spent months avoiding her b/c he couldnt bare to hear her talk about her father or see him or see him and her together and not only did she take that immensely hard she took it personally. to her, it feels like she cant take two steps without saying something wrong and angel doesnt really offer any explantions. they both yearn for the closeness they used to experience with each other and that is where the story begins basically. where they're trying to "repair" their friendship but its not going well for obvious reasons
just to digress a little bit from here. this is where angel and ness get closer while kat gets further from them. ness was an orphan at some point before she got adopted by her now moms and so she has insight into what angel is thinking and is able to talk to him about it and make him feel less alone. its a weird place to be in for the bruisehouse crew b/c they've always been so close and now all of the sudden they're not. all of the sudden kat feels like her best friends are starting to hate her.
neither of these characters are wrong about the way they feel. when reflecting on this particular plot point in the story i wanted to get across how kat can be inconsiderate of other peoples feelings at times. i felt like in the original way i wrote it i depicted angel in a more negative light than i wanted to. sometimes kat gets uncomfortable and the first thing she does is run away (ironic b/c this is what angel did that made her so upset). when she cant run she tells him (in kinder words but yk) to "get over it" instead of helping her best friend heal. mostly because she misses him and shes anxious b/c she doesnt like feeling like hes mad at her all the time even if thats not the case. she and angel will make up obviously, but this strife wont really fully repair itself until kat changes her pov and stops taking angel being depressed so personally.
