I’ve finally finished Graduation so over the next few days and after expect some finale posts I’ve been saving
if i want to get into taz, should i start from the very beginning? and is the whole thing with the same characters/story? also would reading the new graphic novel be to spoilery? because it looks really cool but i want to make sure i do this the right way.
Here is the breakdown
Taz has 3 main campaigns, each separate from each other, two of which are completed and one is current
Balance is the first campaign and the one that the graphic novels are based off of. Each novel is based of an arc in Balance. Petals to the Metal is the third arc. If you want to start with the novels I recommend starting with the first book/arc called Here There Be Gerblins. It’s less about spoilers and more about context. I think Balance is the best place to start taz as it gives a good introduction to actual play podcast story telling and is also most likely the most popular taz campaign. It is a high/medium fantasy dnd setting with Griffin as the DM and Travis, Justin, and Clint, playing Magnus, Taako, and Merle respectively. It lasted 69 (nice) episodes.
Amnesty is the second campaign. After Balance they did a few mini arcs exploring having different DM’s and different systems. Amnesty started out as one of these mini arcs and was later expanded. As much as I love Amnesty I would not choose it as a starting point as it moves faster to balance as they are more experienced. That being said I will reiterate it is a completely stand alone story. It is an urban fantasy setting using the Monster of the Week system. Griffin is once again the DM with Travis, Justin, and Clint playing Aubrey, Duck, and Ned. It lasted 36 episodes.
Graduation is the third and ongoing campaign. Unlike Amnesty it did not start as a mini arc. If the other two arcs seem a little too much to tackle or you want an updating story Graduation is also a good place to start. It isn’t too far along right now and very fun. Part of why it is a good starting point is that Travis is the DM so the tone is different. It is back to a high fantasy dnd setting focused on a heroism and villainy school. As I said Travis is the DM with Griffin, Justin, and Clint playing Fitzroy, The Firbolg, and Argo. Its ongoing with as of now 19 episodes.
About the mini arcs. Do Not Start With Them. They are bite sized story but you miss a lot of the dynamics they are playing with. Also they make a lot of jokes about balance. If you do listen I recommend you don’t skip them. They are super fun I love dust. Quick run down is Commitment - DM’d by Clint, Amnesty - DM’d by Griffin, Dust - DM’d by Travis.
TL;DR - There are three separate stories, you should probably start at the beginning of Balance, if you read the Graphic Novels the order goes, Here There Be Gerblins, Murder On The Rockport Limited, Petals To The Metal
oh im so not caught up is taz grads finale soon??? i uhh really need to start listening again then OTL
Oh the finale dropped today, even tho they had an episode last week. We are in the same boat trying to catch up
okay but like, could you imagine if the Umbrastaff broke and Lup was released but Taako hadnt gotten his memorys back. Like this chick comes out of his magic umbrella, screams about his love life and looks exactly like him but he has ZERO clue who she is
I’m on episode 5 of Amnesty and I can confirm I’m the real life Dani Adventurezone
The plot thickens

I’m behind a bit but I’d like to say, Fitzroy’s trance is identical to sleep paralysis
