Smith & Wesson “Victory” revolver in .38 S&W

The British Victory revolvers in .38 S&W are an interesting wartime story. Apparently Smith&Wesson had a contract with the British for a light machine-gun, the M1940. Unfortunately either S&W couldn’t meet the contract, the guns were lost at sea or the British were not pleased with the product, but in either case S&W was stuck owing the British guns at a time where their company was hurting for money. So, they decided to offer the British model-10 revolvers instead. The British, chronically short on all arms at that point in the war accepted the offer, and that’s how they ended up producing these revolvers.
