the naming of our dev problems
the boeing problem - the code is timeboxed in such a way that it will cease functioning some amount of time after initialization unless restarted within that box. see also, let’s hide hardcoded constraints deep down in the depths of the codebase.

a ssurgo situation - you have written an interface for modeling some hydrological system that relies on the highest resolution soils data available over a large area. at any professional meeting, an older hydrologist stands in the back of the room, waiting to take the entire ten minute question period to complain about {some pet issue} in the ssurgo that makes it invalid for anything apparently and so invalidates anything else you have said and will say, ad infinitum, get off my lawn. you note that he pulls the same thing on the next presenter.
the pest problem - someone picked a variable to optimize some model against but the model is not, in fact, sensitive to that variable. three months later, the eigenvalues are basically exception messages and you chalk it up to modeling streamflow in arid lands. calibrating zeroes is straightforward at least.
