#ROCKSOUND MAGAZINE :: INSIDE THE MIND OF DANNY CRAVEN: THE ENIGMATIC LEAD SINGER OF THIEVES

CRAVEN LAUGHS, and the mood shifts to something lighter, even after the conversations that we had shared about her history. That is something about Danny: somehow, she has the ability to lighten almost any mood. Her demeanor is light, airy, and full of whimsy and joy, despite the misery she may or may not face (and the way, she says, her band mates enjoy playing in her face). When Danny started Thieves, she thought she had a band of brothers, ones who would stick by her until the end. “They actually all kind of picked out their replacements,” she admits, a bit of a wistful smile under her glasses, adjusting them with the base of her palm before continuing. “So, in a way, every single member has stuck by me, you know?” She shrugs lightly. “I don’t hold any ill will against them. they’re living their lives, moving towards their own goals. What I want isn’t always what the entire group wants, and I get that.” The entire history of the band has been a revolving door. With each original member leaving, someone new stepped up to Danny’s side. “My brother, Jacob, he was Oz’s replacement, and Duke replaced his brother, Aaron. Eric basically asked for Mick to replace him if anything ever happened, so that’s…” She trails off, and there is a wistful look in her eye. Eric Lancer, the original drummer for Thieves, passed away in 2021 in a car accident. Craven recalls “…not being sure what to do. Eric was an intregal part of the band.” But they, collectively, as they had done many times before, picked themselves up and pressed forward. “Lacer would have become a ghost just to kick my ass and haunt me if we disbanded Thieves after he died. We couldn’t go anywere. This band was just as important to him as it is to me. When I wrote Wish You Were Here for him, we all knew it was gonna be a setlist staple.” She smiles, takes a sip of her drink, and there is that lightness again: facing a conversation about the death of her longtime friend. “Lacer would come back to life and kill me if I wasn’t having a good time. ”

Um ganz ehrlich zu sein, ich hasse Schnell. Ich hasse jede Form von Geschwindigkeit. Deskhalb fahre ich auch so ungern Auto. Ich bin sehr gerne entschleunigt. Also was ich unglaublich gerne mag, ist Tagträumen. Das ist so eine Entspannungsform von mir. Ich finde traumhafte Dinge sehr schön und deshalb täume ich auch sehr gerne. Heimat. Ich bin in Dänemark geboren, als Teil der deutschen Minderheit und habe das grosse Privileg in einem wunderbaren Land zu leben, aber eine andere Identität zu vertreten. Wenn man zwischen zwei Küsten gross wird, zwischen Ost-und Nordsee, dann hat man es täglich in der Luft, täglich im Sein .. also es muss immer Wasser in der Nähe sein. Was für viele ein Albtram ist, ein grauer Novembertag bei Regen am Meer, ist für mich pures Glück und Endorphine pur. Wenn man alleine ist sowieso, ein Haustier ist ein toller Weg zur Zweisamkeit. Ein Hund speziell, weil ich unheimlicher Hundefan bin. Es gibt kein anderes Haustier auf dieser Welt, was eine solche Symbiose zwischen Mensch und Tier darstellt wie der Hund. Jedes Haus, jede Wohnung, jede Familie braucht einen Hund um komplett glücklich zu sein.

Wenn du am Set Pausen hast, ist es die Frage, ist es eine kurze Pause an einem langen Drehtag ist, oder hast du schon alle Zeitungen gelesen, achtzehn Kaffee getrunken … dann kann eine lange Setpause auch total blöd sein. So oder so ist es für mich immer toll an einem Set zu sein, denn das ist für mich Arbeitsglück. Ich finde das klassische Fernsehen toll. Ich mache selber gerne Fernsehen, ich mag Serienformate. Ich finde die Arbeitsweisen im deutschen Fernsehen toll und mag wie es aufgebaut ist. Ich bin ein klassischer Fernsehfan. Auch als Konsument. Happy End ist wichtig und nötig, weil’s Spass macht. In der Realität gibt nicht immer ein Happy End, leider viel zu selten sogar. Aber in Glaubensfragen und in Lebenssituationen muss es ein Happy End geben. Es macht einfach viel mehr Spass als alles andere.
