#Repost @castheads • • • • • • The History of the Livery Marking one’s own property and people in distinctive colors stretch way back into antiquity. It’s akin to uniforms and symbols worn across millennia so that one could identify one's own. As time rolled forward, and as many people turned to the same types of businesses, they turned to marking their carriages and carts with colors, bold letters, and various claims. With the advent of motor car racing in the early 1900s, it saw not only national events, but also transnational events with participants from other countries. Initially it was colors being assigned to various teams from across the world. The French chose blue, the Germans went white, of course the fiery Italians took red and the British, having their colors already taken, went all Green that we still know as British Racing Green. This went on till about the 1960s. This also saw the use of numbers being black on white backgrounds (which we still see today) In the mid 1960s saw the birth of brightly liveried vehicles. And some of them started sporting their owners, or sponsors colors and logos on the vehicles. Lotus F1 saw them changing their iconic green and gold livery to red/white/gold Gold Leaf and then black/gold for John Player Special. The extra snazzy Martini livery, the ever classic Gulf Oil Racing to name but a few. Today we see a myriad rainbow of colors on cars. Some of them as famous as the cars they are on.
