Brush Up Your Shakespeare
You might be reading Shakespeare without knowing it. Hogarth Press commissioned a series of novels by famous novelists to retell and modernize tales from Shakespeare. Rewrite romeo and juliet
So same fight in the beginning, but when Benvolio goes to Romeo, Romeo says he is in love, but doesn’t specify who. All he says is that they don’t return his affection.
The capulets still host the banquet, and Paris is invited. At the party Juliet falls in love with Romeo instead of the other way around. They meet, and talk but when Juliet tries to kiss Romeo he pulls away. She thinks this is just him being gentlemanly. She asks him to come see her again outside her window.
He goes and she tells him how she loves him, but he does not love her, in fact he is in love with someone else, but he is sure they don’t love him back. She asks who and after a little prodding he confesses his feelings about a young friar in town. She tells him to talk to the Friar, so he goes and tells the Friar how he feels. The Friar returns the affection unlike Romeo thought but in the morning the Friar realizes they need a plan because their love would not be taken well by the townsfolk.
Romeo meets Juliet again and after discussing the situation she proposes they get married, and meet with the Friar for “counsel”. He and the Friar agree and the Friar marries them, Juliet still loves Romeo, so as thanks he kisses her at the ceremony.
Tybalt challenges Romeo because he knows about the truth behind the marriage, but Mercutio accepts the duel to protect his friends honor. Romeo tries to stop them but Mercutio gets stabbed, and as he falls Tybalt tells him the truth about Romeo, but Mercutio says he already knew and he was still his friend no matter who he chooses to be with. Enraged by the death of his friend Romeo kills Tybalt, and he spends one last night with the Friar before his exile. Juliet learns about Romeo’s killing her kinsman, but still sides with Romeo.
The Capulets still plan to marry Juliet to Paris, and when Juliet asks her nurse for advice she tells Juliet to marry Paris. When Juliet reacts poorly to her advice the Nurse tells Paris of the marriage and the truth behind it.
Paris goes to kill the Friar for marrying Romeo and Juliet, but Juliet finds out and tries to defend the Friar. Paris strikes Juliet and she falls into a coma, the Friar escapes on goes to find Romeo.
With her wedding with Romeo completely hidden Paris moves the marriage ahead of schedule, but Juliet is still in her coma.
The Friar finds Romeo and tells him about Juliet, then says he must go away, and that he would always love Romeo, that they would meet again, but to stay with and protect Juliet in the meantime.
Romeo rushes back to Juliet, and meets Paris who is watching over Juliet's body. Paris believes that if he kills Romeo the marriage will completely disappear, so he attacks and kills Romeo, and as Romeo falls Juliet wakes up. Paris turns and tells her that she now has no excuse not to marry him, but she tells him that he is wrong, that she loved Romeo and couldn’t live without him. She kills herself next to Romeo and holds his hand as they die.
The watch comes and finds Paris over two dead bodies. Paris explains the whole situation to the Prince, as well as Capulet and Montague. The Prince punishes him to death for his crimes, and the Capulets and Montagues decide to end their feud.
Realizing too late that 'tap you by the end of the night' should be 'tap that sweet ass by the end of the night'.
