Making a RESIN mold to cast SILICONE . . I did a test with using silicone as a release agent instead of Ease Release, vaseline or any of the other usual release agents. My prior tests with those agents all failed. . . This time, I used a thinned layer of Dragon Skin silicone. I applied it sparingly to the master. In this method you will lose some detail, so keeping it as thin as possible is important. Tinting the silicone with a color will help you see where the silicone is building up around the edges of your master so you can brush it away. . . After the silicone cured (about 1.5 hours), I poured Smooth-Cast 300 into the mold box and allowed it to cure (about 15 minutes). . . The final resin pour is a beautiful replica of the master, with the additional bonus of being extra shiny and smooth on the surface! Now I'm wondering if my sanding and sealing the master was over the top. Hmm.... . . I am going to be using this method for the remaining mold boxes I need to make for Hela's suit details. You can use this method for silicone, clay, and even thermoplastics (worbla, etc). Just remember to consider whether or not you will need a release agent for the material you are casting.
