She pauses, and her hand drifts down to where her blaster used to rest at her hip. “We could go out there,” she suggests, and her gaze is fixed on an invisible horizon.

“Go rogue?” he asks, and grimaces. “Like Scarif?”

“Like we go on leave,” she says, looking at him again, “or we call it that, at least. Just you and me and Kay. We go somewhere, poke around, see what we find. Report back.” She flashes him at an attempt at a smile. “No trouble.”

“You always had a gift for finding it,” he says, but now he’s actually smiling. “Draven will have a fit if he has to sanction us just as he retires.”

“So,” Jyn says, and crosses her arms in a cocky gesture he knows of old, “let’s not get caught.”

January Fic Recs: Sickfic!

I don't know about you, but January always seems to be when me or everyone around me gets  sick. Maybe it's the weather, maybe it's the stress of the holiday season catching up with you, maybe it's just because January is awful. Grab your TheraFlu, your chicken soup, and your favorite snuggly blanket and settle in with these wonderful sickfics.

One-shot, 2k, canon-verse

Struck down by illness after a mission, Jyn lies feverish in Cassian's quarters. He's not there, but K-2 is, bound by a promise to Cassian that he'll make sure Jyn recovered by the time he gets back. Or even if he doesn't. 

Sickfic is often fluffy, but this has more than a tinge of angst to it, as Kay and Jyn both know there's a strong chance Cassian might not be back. After all, they're still in the middle of a war. But the reluctant affection between them is bolstered by their shared love for Cassian and hope for his return.

After a wicked nightmare and an equally wicked migraine do her in, Jyn struggles to make it through her day. At her lowest point, Cassian finds her, and she finds that she can accept comfort and care from him even if she's too stubborn to take it from anyone else. 

Jyn's illness is written so vividly that you almost get sympathy nausea for her. Of course, this means that when Cassian finds her, you also get sympathy relief. It's a lovely snapshot of how just having someone you love and trust take care of you can make you feel better even before the medicine takes effect.

One-shot, 1.3k, canon-verse

After a mission on a planet with a terrible climate, Cassian refuses to admit he's sick. No matter that he's coughing and bleary-eyed and kinda clingy, he's totally not sick! Jyn puts up with it until he can't deny it anymore, then tucks him into bed. 

Somehow a lot of this fandom's sickfics (or at least, a lot of the ones I've reblogged on my personal Tumblr) feature Jyn as the sick one. This features Cassian down for the count, and insisting he's not. It's really lovely to see Jyn trying to convince him that he's allowed to take care of himself, and to see how much just being around her makes him feel better.

“Why am I here?” she asks him the next morning, the storm having passed them by. She still feels faintly green and carefully sips at the tea he’d made for them all. They’re sitting on the forward bench, watching a herd of sea cows cross the bow.

“You’re here because the pilot is a woman,” Cassian reminds her, going over the mission brief details once more, “and it is Alliance policy for a woman to be present when a woman defects. Bodhi is here because he knows the pilot. I’m here to handle the first contact and debrief her.”

She nods wearily, sipping at her tea. “Okay,” she says, stretching her legs out so her boots tap at a coiled line. “Those are good reasons.”

Cassian pulls at his lip with his teeth, looking over at her. “If it helps,” he says, “Draven says to give it one more week.”

One week. She can manage anything for a week.”

“There are a hundred rebel soldiers sleeping in the dark room and she curses under her breath as she picks her way down the aisle of bunk beds ensconced against the walls. Dim lights by the door cast strange shadows over the sleeping forms and she wills her eyes to work in the dark. The soldiers are unfamiliar in sleep, guards temporarily down, but as her eyes adjust she picks out identifying markers. Shoes sitting by the beds, jackets hung on the wall. Not everyone is sleeping alone, which makes her feel less conspicuous.  She moves quietly, more from fatigue than courtesy, until she spies a familiar profile on a bottom bunk.”

“The weeks after Scarif are tense, busy, and too fraught with emergency for much self-evaluation. She, Bodhi and Cassian had gotten piss drunk after the Death Star celebration where they'd been honored with Skywalker and Solo, and Chirrut and Baze had escorted them back to their bunks before leaving. Yavin IV was caught between spaces - between celebration and escape – and it's not until they land on Hoth, still worse for the wear, that anything close to normalcy takes hold.

With normalcy came the old instincts to run, hide, protect herself with a new name and new allies.

Somehow, she finds herself lingering outside Cassian's quarters instead.”

She stumbles onto the ship after him, cradling her arm, and as K2 and Bodhi initiate take-off he turns towards her, heart pounding with fear and adrenaline as her breath comes in short puffs.

“Are you hurt?” he asks blindly, reaching for her only to snatch his fingers back as she lurches away. He forgets she’s like a feral animal when she’s injured, used to being the only person having her back. “Let me see,” he says, trying to force authority and calm into his voice, both to reassure her and take control of the situation.

Inside, he’s anything but.
