We all have celebrities we look up to or admire. Singers, dancers, actors, influencers, whoever it may be- it can be agreed they all have a profound effect on our lives one way or another. Yes, at times, fame can be used negatively and often causes anger amongst fans, however, celebrities actually have a really important and potentially life changing power- speaking out.
Take Billie Eilish for example- the cover of today’s blog. Since she rose to fame in 2017 at the mere age of sixteen, she has been known for being a mental health advocate. She has covered a range of topics such as depression, her struggles with body dysmorphia and the darker sides of fame. Her original song from the Barbie movie ‘What Was I Made For’ has an obvious emotional value, it speaks about feeling lost for purpose, having a fragile identity and feeling as though you don’t belong. Habits as easy as speaking on an uncomfortable, personal topic like mental health in interviews can have a really important value. One piece of advice, motivation or letting people know their not alone can be the make or break between someone’s own mental health- and celebrities can only be thanked for that.
Another celebrity that has spoken out about mental health struggles, in particular anxiety and how that helped him become a better parent is Ryan Reynolds. He told People magazine how his anxiety helped him focus more on his children saying his focus was ‘less on [himself] and more on [his kids]’ adding how he feels Hugh Jackman, who joined him in the interview ‘know[s] that too’. He also continued by saying how his own mental health struggles have given him the power to recognise when his children are going through feelings of self doubt or stress, using his own struggles to help those he loves. Speaking about parental struggles or parenting in general is a very important topic that many celebrities have covered on. Its important because parents themselves can listen to other celebrities speaking out about what they are going through too and it makes parents feel less alone- comforted that they aren’t the only ones going through what they are going through. Molly- Mae, YouTuber, Influencer and Entrepreneur of both Maebe (her clothing line) and Filter (her fake tan brand), has frequently spoken out about her struggles of parenting and how her mental health has been affected by it- particularly in her vlogs on her YouTube channel. Shortly after her daughter Bambi was born, she posted a vlog called ‘The Truth’ where she mentioned how becoming a mother was ‘the hardest thing that has ever happened to [her]’ and how she has ‘found it really really hard’. The video got a very positive response, with many mothers commenting. One mother commented ‘I actually appreciate the transparency of this video’ and told her to ‘keep on keeping it real’. Another user commented ‘to know we’re not on our own means a heck of a lot’. The sheer amount of love and honesty in the videos comments alone shows how much it means to people going through similar things to see a celebrity, who they may think has the most perfect life- through what they see on social media-going through hardships and being truthful about their daily struggles.
Lady Gaga is also a celebrity who has spoken about the hardships she has gone through in her life- and how they have affected her. She spoke to Rolling Stone about her struggles with work life and how she went through a psychotic break. She reflected on her life in 2017 in particular, when she was filming the Academy Award Winning film ‘A Star Is Born’ whilst simultaneously performing a world tour for her record ‘Joanne’. She said the filming of A Star Is Born had utterly consumed her, saying she did it ‘on lithium’ and it led to her having a psychotic break and cancelling her tour as she ‘went to the hospital for psychiatric care’ . Again, letting your fans and the general public know struggles that you went through and how working caused you so much stress it made you mentally ill is a very important practice that celebrities have access to due to their mass following which gives them the power to speak out- and make a difference.
The next time you are struggling or feeling alone, take a moment to reflect on how others have gone though similar experiences- and they may be more similar to you than you think. It doesn’t take long to research a celebrity and read about their own struggles, which many of them have opened up about. One of the advantages of technology and social media is that we CAN find out about these things- realise that not all we see on Instagram is real life. Celebrities are real people, and they experience real feelings like all of us too.
Until next time!
