OKAY so molly @mollywaddle asked me for my thoughts on wings, and i am v honored bc no one ever asks me my thoughts on music (which might be good bc they’re usually incoherent) so i am going to Try My Best
here we go (this got super long and out of control, hence the cut)
(disclaimer: this is prob my first time writing out my thoughts about an album so i hope it all makes sense. and also i didn’t look up any of the lyrics to these songs. i almost never look up lyrics to songs, kpop or not. i’m basing these reviews purely on the music)
(also i literally JUST watched the short films because for some reason i didn’t do that before. those were CREEPY btw)
1. intro: boy meets evil - i can’t hear the intro without thinking of hobi’s awesome dancing, and i love that it’s basically a solo for him (i heard some other voices at the end there but it’s mostly him throughout)
2. blood sweat & tears - i LOVE this one. it sounds super different from what bts usually does and it was really unexpected the first time i heard it. i like that they're going with this for their promoting track because lately they’ve been doing a lot of bangers, and while this still has their standard super-hard choreo, it’s a lot different from their previous singles
3. begin - kookie solo!!! this one surprised me too because it started off like your typical slow jam, but then the beat and the instrumentals in the chorus changed it up nicely
4. lies - jiminnie time~~ this one is nice and dramatic, and i expect nothing less from jimin. this song shows off his range nicely, i think. i like the switch from a minor key at the beginning to a major key for a bit of the chorus, and the instrumentals for some reason are reminding me of the phantom of the opera????? i literally don’t know. maybe it’s the organ and the dramatic strings. anyway, another good one
5. stigma - my baby taehyung!!!!! i love love LOVE that he gets a solo because he doesn’t get a ton of lines usually and he used to be so insecure about his voice. and that falsetto! i just love his voice, it’s so rich and he can get super deep as well as killing the falsetto. i have too many feelings to assess this one properly. AND he helped write it!!!!!!!!!!! omg
6. first love - yo sugaaa! i mean we all know he’s an awesome rapper and writer. go listen to his solo stuff if you need to be convinced. i like this one because it starts out super low key and builds slowly. and i have no idea what he’s saying but i love that you can hear his attitude and his personality when he raps
7. reflection - namjoon’s turn now. interesting to hear him (sorta) singing. he usually gets so intense and fast when he raps and goes all squeaky all the time (intentionally) and this is a nice change of pace. def getting 80′s vibes with that synth. but like also props for having writing/producing credits on 10 out of the 15 tracks?? nice job dude
8. mama - hobiiiiiiii okay so lyric-wise this chorus is not the most exciting, but the song is upbeat and very hobi-like (obvi since he helped write it) and i think it fits his personality. notttttt my fave on the album, but not bad either. just a smidge generic i think
9. awake - jin’s song is very jin. a slow, emotional ballad. i can picture him reaching out to the camera and grabbing the front of his shirt while singing this. possibly also falling to his knees in despair. also kinda generic, i think. there’s nothing that really makes it stand out to me (SORRY JINNIE)
10. lost - ahhh everyone back together again. i like this one and tbh i think they sound the best when they’re all together. i love that they all got solo songs but really they are unstoppable as a unit. there isn’t anything super WOW about this song but after the 7 solo songs it’s just really nice to hear all of them together again.
11. bts cypher 4 - CYPHER. man, i’m with taehyung. cyphers are some of my favorite parts of their albums and i’m glad they finally did #4 after not having one on the last album. like it’s literally been TWO YEARS since the last cypher. this one is interesting. sounds very trap-inspired to me (i mean like i can’t say that for sure because i don’t really listen to trap music, but that’s what it reminds me of). i can imagine bambam dabbing to this.......... (seriously someone stop him) HONESTLY this was cool, but i feel like it’s not really their style. other cyphers were better but this was an interesting experiment
12. am i wrong - okay so the sample in this one is cool! i like this one. it sounds a bit different from their usual stuff. like the combo of the instrumentation, the sample and the beat reminds me of bubba sparxxx which i was not at all expecting from bts??? but it works
13. 21st century girl - this one is a bop. i like it. i see it’s following the trend of having few/no lyrics in the chorus. i’m not sure how i feel about that trend in general, but it works here with rapmon yelling in the background...
14. still wishing there will be better days - apparently this is their first official fan song? idk like i said before i didn’t look at the lyrics. this is just my first listen. so i’m sure some of the sentiment is lost on me. but i like this one. usually fan songs annoy me because they get super cheesy and emotional. although tbh this one could too. i just can’t understand it. ANYWAY this is a good one. suga’s parts are my fave. could do without the large chorus of people at the end tho...
15. interlude: wings - okay first question why is the interlude at the END. unless they’re making this a part 1 of another album set. but i’m pretty sure not because this is a full album on its own (not like hyyh). i REALLY like the beat of this song. and the beat behind the rapping is really cool as well. it was a bit unexpected. they could def play this one in a club. like this is one of those kpop songs you could put on at a party of people who don’t normally listen to kpop and they wouldn’t notice it wasn’t in english because they’d be too busy dancing
so overall this album is GREAT. i love that each member got a solo song, but that the rest of the songs highlighted how well they work together. the title track is one of my faves and i’ll definitely be playing that one a lot. i want to do another run-through of the whole album again so maybe i’ll have some more fully-formed opinions then. but as usual, bts delivered. i haven’t been disappointed by them yet. i mean yeah, there are a few songs i’m not crazy about but overall a really awesome album.
WHEW well that was fun :D
also apparently i’m the only person who wasn’t super stoked about jin’s solo song (i read some other people’s opinions about it...) who knows i may change my mind when i listen to it again
molly, i hope you enjoyed my long-winded opinions and i would LOVE to hear your thoughts on the album too :D
edit: also i Do Not Get the video for blood sweat & tears so if someone does, please explain it to me because i am totally Lost
