As heartbreaking as Mondale no longer recognising Shiv's scent was, I also desperately want a scene when Greg show's up in her and Tom's apartment with Mondale immediately getting all excited to see Greg and Shiv witnessing it and realising that Tom spends way more time with her cousin than sometimes grabbing drinks together.

primarily, the bars are alluding to tom’s fear surrounding his possible imprisonment. it’s something that’s always at the front of his mind to the point that it starts manifesting in his environment.

the bars could also be alluding to tom being the bird in a gilded cage. to be a bird in a gilded means to live in luxury, but without freedom. tom feels like the punching bag in his marriage and in the company, but he can’t fight back because of all the great, material things the roys have gotten him.

this motif could also be used to obstruct his face to imply that he is a sneaky character that’s always hiding his next attack. he is two-faced hiding his second, true face.
