Hey guys, did you know that if you ever post a GIF on this website, be it in your own original post or otherwise, you’ll get notified whenever someone finds it via the Tumblr GIF search feature and adds it to a post? I think more people should know about this because there’s always a chance, albeit small, that someone will come across the random GIF of old-timey people clapping and cheering you attached to a funny post about worms making music five years ago and deem it the perfect reaction image for the video of a person pissing inside another person’s asshole they’re about to reblog, which Tumblr will helpfully link directly to you via an incredibly cryptic, very curiosity-inducing notification that says nothing but “tumblruser47266 has added your genre-defying work to a post”.

Hello friends we need to talk about this twitter account:

You might know him from a thread where he was getting wowed by free appetisers in a Mexican restaurant.

Firstly: He is doing a bit pretending to be a wandering samurai. It's a joke and his posts are all made up. This is very obvious if you actually look at his account and website:

He does purport to be Japanese but based on some of the other content he posts there's reason to believe he's British.

Which brings me to my second point: his Samurai content is interspersed with posts like this:

He is not cute or funny. Stop platforming him.

The chips and salsa thread went viral in June and his website seems to have gone live in July. This confirms what I suspected which is that said website with it's explicit disclaimers was made in response to the big viral hit.

Consequently, back when he first blew up it was potentially a bit harder to figure out that his stories are fictional. That said, the New York Times worked it out so I'm comfortable accusing outlets who ran the story describing him as a Japanese world cup tourist of legitimately terrible journalism.

Regarding some comments in the notes:

Yeah this is also the guy from the truck thread going around. That's what prompted this post and in retrospect I should have said so explicitly.

He claims he just uses AI to translate his posts from Japanese. He also says the art on his website isn't AI generated. I think he is full of shit on both counts.

I only gave a couple of examples but even on a brief look through his twitter it was apparent that he posts a LOT about UK politics to the point where he's quite patently British. He is a Restore supporter which is a party that split away from mainstream far right party Reform due to feeling they weren't right wing enough.

It might not surprise you to hear he does not seem to know shit about Japan? Both the salsa story and the truck story failed the smell test for people who are familiar with Japan. There's also a story about going to a potluck where he seemingly couldn't come up with a single Japanese dish for the character to cook??

Yeah his whole bit is racist and it is troubling that so many people took a guy badly roleplaying as a medieval samurai to be a 21st century Japanese tourist.

Hey so as a minority from the region this bitch is talking about

You're not allowed to talk about Arabs like this unless you're from a minority in West Asia or Africa. And most of us don't talk like this in front of white people, because we don't trust you. You are not being an ally to us. You're being racist. Theres this thing called context, you see.

In West Asia, sure, to a certain extent you can say "Arabs are the white people of West Asia". Some Arabs even call themselves white. You cant meaningfully do harm to the people there by appropriating Arabic, because theyre the cultural majority.

You know where else that'd be true? For Chinese people in China, Japanese people in Japan, etc. There's a huge difference in the material conditions of a diaspora or an ongoing colony and the homeland of a free people. That's why you can still be racist by appropriating Chinese aesthetics in the US. In an English speaking context, Arabs are not white people. In an English speaking context, you guys kill people on the assumption that they're Arab regularly. People shoot up holy sites and murder children because they are Arab. You have bombed several Arab countries and destroyed thousands of lives directly through war. Indirectly, the west has funded religious extremism that endangers both Arabs and non Arabs and for many people, is bound up in ethnosupremacist politics (see: Sudan).

Additionally, you dont get to act like this when you CANNOT CONSISTENTLY TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DIFFERENT ETHNIC GROUPS IN THIS REGION. And if you claim you can, you're probably a liar because we've all lived next to each other for a very long time and its almost impossible to tell us apart visually if we aren't wearing culturally specific clothes that I know from experience most westerners can't fucking identify. Because this will be (and is) used to justify a blanket feeling of racism and resentment, even if the person being targeted by this is an Assyrian or an Amazigh or Kurd. The only way you'd tell us apart is if you had a cultural familiarity with our names, socializing patterns, etc, and you dont really have that unless you're from this region (which is why a random Kurd can look at my Twitter profile where I intentionally don't state my religion or ethnicity and use a very neutral sounding name and still figure out i'm a Copt fairly quickly) or significantly enmeshed with us.

Do not use us to score points in your shitty racist culture wars. Not only are you wrong by acting like the context of West Asia is applicable to how Arabs are treated in the West, you actively put us in danger when you do this by associating non Arab minorities with racism, western interference, and imperialism. That association has material consequences for us and has gotten people fucking killed, so if you truly care even slightly about us, learn to shut the fuck up.
