THIS IS THE HARDEST I HAVE LAUGHED IN SO LONG YOU HAVE CURED MY DEPRESSION
At this rate, I might just become a full time grackle photographer. The purple and blue interference color on their feathers is so magical.
Half Moon Workshop, 2026. Painting and mezuzah case inspired by the Duke of Sussex Pentateuch (an illuminated manuscript from medieval Ashkenaz) and featuring Scottish and Jewish symbolism. Both available on Etsy. Hand-painted by Half Moon.
Tirion upon Túna
Many months ago now, I thought it would be fun to try painting locations from the Silmarillion in the style of the Monument Valley games, because they are among my favourite games and I enjoy the art very much. Unfortunately, it turns out that this style enables my worst habits in terms of perfectionism and adding endless tiny details, and so this cityscape of Tirion has taken a grand total of 148 hours to complete. Please zoom in to see all the details!!!
I think the city was built to look beautiful under treelight, using principally white stone, which takes on a golden-pink hue under Laurelin's light and a silver-blue hue under Telperion's. Open spaces and tall windows let the light into every building, especially around the Great Square, where the royal and aristocratic families live. Valuing creativity and craftsmanship as they do, the Noldor experimented with different types of architecture and ornamentation (inspired by a mixture of real-world architectural styles as well as the architecture in Monument Valley). Some buildings have intricate painted designs on the walls, mostly based on natural imagery or geometric patterns; others have statues of Elven figures dancing, holding musical instruments, or holding birds. The flags around the Great Square are based on the Two Trees and Finwë's heraldry.
The city is also full of trees and gardens - I got a bit carried away with all the plants and birds 😅 Tirion probably gets regular rainstorms blown in through the Calacirya, so it's wetter than inland Valinor and many different plants can grow in the warm treelit climate. They have a lot of roof gardens.
