Irregular Monday Update, Edition 18 (I think)

At long last, a room of one's own~

Hello, friends! After one of the world's most excruciatingly protracted out-of-state moves (seriously, it's taken over two years!), I'm extremely happy to report I now have an actual study and a real desk again! ✨ Other Spheres proved a very fruitful maiden voyage, and now-- Now, it's time to finish Bright Oak, for real.

Refocusing on my massive and unwieldy passion project two and a half years after initially releasing the demo, I have to admit, there is--quite a lot I would like to revisit before re-releasing the demo with voicing. Way back in 2023, baby Butterfly Rocket didn't know what they didn't know, and after working with so many skilled and talented individuals on Burdock, Tell It Slant, If One Goes Astray, and now Other Spheres, I can better see where there's room for improvement. ❤️ I'm a strong believer in the saying, Perfection is the enemy of Good (and by extent, finished)--but I also want to keep growing and improving with each step forward, and both my standards and (hopefully!) my skills have advanced quite a bit from where they were set back in 2023.

Bright Oak has been my heartwood project for many years now: I'm determined to see it through while also giving it its due. And now that I have (quite literally) space to focus for more than a jam-length sprint, I can see the path to getting this finished with greater clarity and urgency than ever before.❤️ And so: you can expect the Irregular Monday Updates to start being more regular going forward!

To that end, here's the current Progress Report:

Initial Replay of Demo Notes: Jotting down initial impressions of what could use revisiting; editing some transitions; notes on audio cues (and also the audio balance, my stars)

Redesign of Main Menu: Not reinventing the wheel, but crafting something a little less out-of-the-box Ren'py; utilizing the actual game logo for title screen, tinkering on the color-sepia transition timing and design

To Do List (week+):

Finalize new Main Menu design, speak with programmer

Review music cues, edit as necessary;

Prep list of exact audio balancing needs for audio engineer;

Finish take selection on voice acting (pending final lines from John/MisterShins, who needs to build his booth now that we have a space for it);

Clean up transitions especially on the boundary segments;

Clean-up edits to opening sequence, etc (will keep this minor);

To Do List (month+):

Re-release demo once edits are in place, menu refreshed, audio is rebalanced, and voice acting is implemented!

Continue coding Act II

Paint and implement missing Forster backgrounds

Line and paint missing Jasper-route backgrounds

Contact VAs to start scheduling resumption of recording

To Do List (year+):

(if applicable) Prep for a small crowdfunding campaign (TBD)

(if applicable) Commission necessary art for funding rewards (might do these anyway just as fun merch)

Finish and release the whole game!

Thank you all again (and again, and again, and again) for your patience these last couple years! ❤️ It's been hectic and uncertain for so long, but now that I'm finally settled and no longer betwixt and between homes, it feels like I can chart the course going forward with renewed confidence and focus.

Monday update 09/29/25 (US MM/DD/YY)

A Tale Painted with Blood

I’ve officially started writing the next chapter! It’s coming along a little slowly for two reasons: one I’ll get into later in this post, and the other is that I’ve been so caught up in my other story. Switching back into Ember’s voice has been a bit of a challenge, since she’s innocent, clumsy, and cute, while my other main character is basically her complete opposite. Just trying to slip back into that mindset again, lol

Sword and Spice

might be taking a small hiatus… but honestly, I’m already itching to write the next chapter, so who knows how long this “hiatus” will actually last.

Recent Thoughts

I’ve been doing good! Sorry for the lack of updates last week, I caught the biggest ick with my writing and ended up avoiding both social media and my Word doc until it passed. (It probably had something to do with it being my monthly, so that might explain it.)

Gnawing Thoughts

And onward to some thoughts that have been gnawing at me...

I used to write fanfiction years ago. It was a long, ongoing story that became a real passion project. I started it during the My Hero Academia hype, but unfortunately, I ended up getting bullied over it.

I went back and forth about whether to bring this up here, since it’s all in the past now and those people don’t message me anymore. Part of me worried that mentioning it might spark the bullying again. Maybe I should have just started a new account and avoided the risk altogether, but I also wanted to show them they didn’t win. Even though I stopped updating and eventually deleted that story, it doesn’t mean they got to me.

And so... I’ve run into a dilemma. MHA isn’t really an anime I’d say I’m passionate about anymore since my tastes have shifted to more mature content, like Vinland Saga and BMW with its darker retelling of Journey to the West. Still, I keep thinking about continuing that story I started so long ago. My idea is to pick it up as a medium-length story that takes place long after the events I originally wrote, with the earlier parts covered through short flashbacks.

The problem is, I already have two other stories I’m actively writing. So now I’m torn. Do I go back and finish that old story as a kind of “F you” to my bullies and give myself a bit of closure, or do I leave it in the past and focus on pushing forward with my two long fics as soon as possible?

Sorry! I just wanted to share where my head’s been lately and why updates have been taking a little longer than usual (not counting wedding planning, which is going great. We already have the venue booked!).

A Sweet Far Thing, Ch. 4

Holland had caught her red hair from a bridge above the river. Tall, slim, the sharpness in her face softened by distance -- but unmistakable.

Arnes’ London was home to more people than Holland can remember seeing in a lifetime. More people, more colors, more sounds, simply more. He couldn’t say for sure what brought him back to this city after years away, but he couldn’t find a reason to leave either. Certainly not now.

He leaned on the bridge’s stone railing, watching Kell Maresh stroll upstream. Everything about her was proper. Everything about her the Friday before was proper, perfect, damn nearly prim and irritating. But then, as now, there were a few things out of place. Then, her dress had been cut more daringly than current fashion, her every move was loose and lithe , she was wearing more lipstick than most Arnesian women appeared to. Now she wore no hat or gloves, her coat collar was turned up on one side, and tendrils of hair were falling from their pins. She looked lost in thought, debating something in her own head as she walked.

A few things out of place, a few things not quite in line with the rest of the world. He couldn’t help but think it made her all the more interesting, that it only served to pull him closer.

Holland watched her disappear underneath the bridge and found himself moving again. Pulled down off the bridge, back onto the sidewalk that ran above the river, following the princess as she went on her way. Holland took the first set of stairs down the riverbank. He was probably crossing a line, following a member of the royal family through the city, but Holland couldn’t help himself. A connection had formed between them, a tether that had tightened and was pulling him towards her, faster with every step.

He thanked the old gods when she stopped farther up the river, tilting her head up to look at the sky. 

“Mas varnesa?” Holland called as he got closer. “Is that you?”

Holland watched, from several feet away, as her spine straightened. The sunlight caught her hair as she turned, making it glow a fiery copper. She blinked, head tilting to one side, and her lips pulled into a small smile.

“Master Vosijk,” Kell said, a fond lilt in her voice. She stepped forward, closing the gap between them. “How are you?”

Products of note, plus shopping advice

At this point many of the new and cool Funassyi products are available exclusively at the Funassyiland stores, with the exception of books, calendars etc. Which is good I guess if you live in Japan, since it’s one-stop shopping, but somewhat inconvenient for overseas Funassyi fans, since Funassyiland does not ship overseas. If you don’t have a cooperative friend in Japan, I recommend using a shopping service.

New products go on sale on the online store on Saturdays at 10PM Japan time. Popular products sell out almost immediately (something a lot of fans are unhappy about at the moment. I hope this situation gets solved soon!)

Grey Parka Service has announced a 120cm tall Funassyi, retailing for 41,000 yen including tax. The first two phases have sold out. The third phases is currently available on the Grey Parka Service site (it’s sold out on the Funassyiland site). Follow Grey Parka Service on Twitter for announcements regarding future releases.

274ch.com, Funassyi’s official streaming video channel/fan club, is the main outlet for Funassyi’s video appearances. Videos are uploaded every couple of days, and are very funny, with Funassyi appearing far more loose and relaxed than he is on broadcast TV. Highlights include a cooking show, Funassyi imitating various Japanese entertainers (his imitation of Beat Takeshi aka Takeshi Kitano is priceless), Funassyi going camping, Funassyi going go-cart racing, and much more. There are also frequent live streams of The Pear doing interviews and so on.

There are also fan-exclusive meets with Funassyi, and fan-exclusive concerts too, for an extra fee.

Membership is 600 yen per month or 6,000 yen per year. You can now join from outside of Japan too, although the site is in Japanese only (and so is customer support and so on). Details here. You will most likely need a Japanese mailing address to receive materials from the site for now.

Note: Sometimes someone at the streaming video provider seems to turn on IP checking/blocking of non-Japanese IPs. If you can’t access the videos, just wait a few hours and it will usually get fixed.
