A common phrases/sentences (mostly in spoken Finnish)

Eiköhän... = Yeah, I guess so...

Mihin meet? = Where are you going?

Miksipä ei = Yeah, why not

Ehkäpä = Perhaps

Minäpä kokeilen. = I'll give it a try.

Tuun kohta. = I'll come soon.

Nähdään taas. = See you again.

Miten menee? = How are you going?

Pärjäätkö näillä? = Can you get by with these? / Will these do you?

Entäs jos...?= What about if...?

Katsotaanpa. = Let's just see.

Toivotaan näin. = Let's hope so.

Ilman muuta. = Definitely / Without a doubt.

Joskus toiste. = Another time.

Kaipaatko jotain? = Do you need anything? (Literally: are you missing anything?)

Missä mennään? = Where is this going?

Tää oli tässä. = This was all. / This is over.

Tästä se lähtee.. = It's starting now... / This is where it gets going...

I did these from memory, so possibly some mistakes or misremembering things. Also obviously there are a milloin different ways to say things in spoken Finnish depending on the dialect etc.

I literally just found out another word for "omena" (apple) is "omppu", and another word for "banaani" (banana) is "bansku".

I learnt these from my children so I don't know if this is just something kids say.

Finnish speakers really look at our own words and go, you know what it's a good word, but now that I've considered it I've decided that we'll have as little of it as we can get away with from now on.

We rly need to bring back the term “acquaintance” like into regular and frequent use. So many high drama community squabbles and feelings of betrayal could be avoided if people just admitted there’s a step between “stranger” and a full on friend whose friendship you have a commitment to continuing and fostering. Like sometimes you’re just aquatinted with someone and you might decide you don’t like them after getting to know them a bit better…that’s very normal

Did you know that when you want emphasize negative answer or message, you can add kyllä into the sentence? Like Haluatko mämmiä? No en kyllä halua! (Do you want mämmi? No, absolutely not!) Or Mene ja tee se! Nyt et kyllä ala jänistää! (Go and do it! Don't be a chicken now!) Or Huomasitko Maijan uudet kengät? No en kyllä huomannut (Did you notice that Maija had new shoes? No, I missed it completely)

Haha yes, this is a nice feature in Finnish.

in finland we dont say “i love you”. we say “saatanan tonttu, mä sotken sut suohon” which roughly translates to “you are the most important thing in my life” and i think thats beautiful

I think is such an awesome way to say you care about someone close to you. How often do we say to the important people like our family “Love you,” but really just say it in passing with little true emotion. We may deep inside truly mean what we are saying and our feelings towards each other, but do we really ever think about what we are saying? 

Additionally, the way Finns say I love you defines what love is. Essentially, I love you is an ambiguous term that is difficult to define in American society. What is exactly meant by these words can be clouded by our individual views and intention behind the words can be commonly confused. Meanwhile, Finns explicitly state their feelings. “You are the most important thing in my life,” wow, that leaves no room for interpretation, it is straight-forward and meaningful. There is no way that you can have two most important things in your life, so this creates an emotional bond that cannot be broken.

The meanings behind the words also show important aspects of Finnish society. The direct nature of these words demonstrates how Finns do not beat around the bush, they say what they mean and leave little room for error. This extends into other parts of their culture like in the business world. In essence, this way of saying how you a care about someone is true to the way that Finns typically talk is refreshing that people can just say what they believe straight-up.

Today at the end of Finnish lessons, my teacher decided to end on an lighter note and asked us to name the animals in some photos. The last photo was of a zebra, and despite it being one of my fav animals, I couldn’t recall ever learning its name in Finnish. Maybe I assumed it was just the same word, or sepra, or separa, or- Anyway so I went with “mielenkiintoinen hevonen”. Yep. This is where I am, fifteen years into studying Finnish. Mielenkiintoiset hevoset. Hyvää vitun yötä.
