One hundred years ago John T. Scopes was put on trial for teaching evolution in a Tennessee classroom. Nearly forgotten is the role of a half dozen University of Chicago professors and alumni in the trial—including the protagonist himself, John Thomas Scopes, EX’31. Political science professor John Mark Hansen recovers the history of these UChicagoans’ involvement in the Scopes “Monkey Trial.”
I beg every single one of you who's from the US (or anywhere else, to be honest) to watch "Inherit the Wind" and read up on the "Monkey trial" it is based on.
It feels very... Apt for the current situation in the US regarding LGBTQ rights and teaching. Once again, religious zeal is making people miserable and standing in the way of scientific education.
