“The Commuters”. This photo is taken from the exact same spot as the previous one, only a handful of minutes before and turning right rather than left. The area behind the walkers is a cinema and normally those rectangles of light would be the back lights of the film posters they hang there. But this day there were no posters, only lights. Which, of course, suited me pretty well 😄 I must have shot about 200 photos of this scene, trying to get people walking in “the right way” in front of these lights. I think that I would have preferred to have only the 4 subjects framed by the light in the picture without the woman in front. Something that perhaps would have reminded of the famous Beatles LP cover. But I’m more than happy to settle for this one 🤗
(let’s pretend it’s Yoko Ono). Something I had never tried before this shot was cranking up the ISO so much (here I’m at ISO 6400, F/4, 1/320s on my 35mm). Coming from landscape photography, my mindset was trained to keep the ISO low and eventually use a longer shutter speed while mounting the camera on a tripod. But most of the subjects in that case are static so it’s OK.
With street, I learned while shooting that higher ISO are perfectly fine (sort of a pun if you like), because character, emotion and “capturing the moment” are more important than sharpness . And at night, with very little light, if you want to freeze action like if you want to photograph commuters, then you must raise the ISO and don’t be afraid of it. It also helps to shoot with a Fujifilm camera because it really handles the low light very well. I know I always sound like a fanboy when I talk about Fuji but I really love it. It’s the brand that got me back into photography, so I’ll always be grateful. Hope you enjoy this one too.
