Intro Post

Hello! Welcome to this-is-monoracism, a blog dedicated to recording racism specifically affecting biracial and multiracial people.

I’m your mod, @pyxilate - on this blog call me Arcadia, since I only use Pyx on that blog because it’s my username but shortened. I use she/it (I am still experimenting with it/its so do w that what you will), and I’m half black, half white (although I am part Native American too I don’t want to complicate things). I made this blog because of my experiences with monoracism, and wanted an outlet for people to be able to share theirs too and to be made aware of what it is.

You may also send in your experiences with regular racism, or even misogynoir or androracism or anything else, I’m not picky! But… what’s the difference between plain racism against a biracial/multiractial person and monoracism?

Racism: being derogatory towards them for an aspect of their race

Monoracism: being derogatory towards them because they are biracial/multiracial

Some examples:

telling someone (this is a real experience I had), that they’re ’too white’ to be black, or look too much like one race to be the other

telling someone that one aspect of their race doesn’t count because they weren’t raised like that race

treating a biracial/multiracial person like they’re not allowed to be a part of communities for those specific races because they’re also other races (such as telling someone who’s black and Asian they can’t be in a black community because they’re also Asian)

If you are someone out here who HAS said one of those things before, just know that that’s monoracism, and you should do better.

I think one of the most interesting things I’ve ever experienced, entirely of me boxing myself into a corner, is the utter fear that I as a person am not black enough to be part of the community. There are a variety of things that go into this, but one of the biggest ones, I think, are the many people of color around me who say that I’m not. And some part of me, regardless of what others say, agrees with them. In this society, there is no room for nuance, certainly not with race, and one day it will lead to someone, somewhere, growing up excluded for where they should be included, and oppression to be erased by not being ‘enough’.

Is there a word for the prejudice mixed race people face? My dad's best friend is half Amazigh, half Black. Due to his green eyes and his only slightly wavy hair, he's very easily identified as mixed by most people, and some people are less than thrilled about that. I'd always thought "well that's just racism", but recently he was turned down when he asked a Black woman out because she said she hated that his mother "tried to marry out of being Black" and said he'd never understand what it's like to REALLY be Black.

The thing is, white people hair and green eyes have never saved him from police harassment or being followed in stores or my dad having to flag down a taxi because no driver will stop for him. He has very much lived life in the US as a Black man. White women act creepy towards him and coo about how pretty their mixed babies will be. It would never have occurred to me before to think of him as not Black. Certainly when he was growing up in the South he was 'Black enough' to be treated as such by racist white people.

And yet... I hesitate to say 'racism' when it's a Black woman acting hateful to a Black-passing man. Is that the right word? If not, what is it? Can someone be racist against their own race? I don't want to pretend like this doesn't happen, but what's the word for it?

And yes, someone can be racist against people of their own race (lateral racism--it's no longer internalized when you're being racist to others). People of color can also be racist to other people of color, and that's just racism. POC can also be colorist or show a thousand other flavors of ethnicity, religion, or race-based bigotry.

there's a book called "the tatra eagle" which is based in 17th century poland and in addition to being very wrong about many aspects of polish culture/language, it also has a plot line where the main character sexually assaults a romani girl because she's "exotic", he regrets it because his children would be half g-word and at the end of the book she magically forgives him and they got engaged.

millenials all live in an alternative world where "wasian" is like basically a slur and has the meaning of weeb, meanwhile gen z all live in an alternate world where none of us have ever witnessed that ever like seriously that has never been a thing so why are these mixed millenials policing how we self-identify and saying 'wasian' is "white-centering" and that the definition we created the word with is voided by this previous one from their world, all in all alienating us from their established mixed community.

also, we aren't stealing from Blasians; it's a fucking portmanteau. Nobody owns the concept of portmanteaus.

(it being a portmanteau is also why it's completely nonsensical to say it ''centers whiteness''. is the spoon component more important to a spork than the fork. do infomericals "center information".)
