Ooh I like the Kappa idea best. Imagine if Nano had just become friends with MerNiles and one day this half roar-half hoot sound just echoes through the entire forest and this EXTREMELY MAJESTIC AND OH SO GREAT THAT AN ANGELIC CHOIR SOUNDS gryphon lands near the lake (on sight) and the leaves just flutter around all majestically for a second and Niles just "Oh look the empress of the forest finaly came back" and Nano's just "whOAHAHA OOH BOY"

he’s hella aware that lom could very very easily kill him but he still sasses her in a knowing playful way bc that’s just how their relationship is

"oh look who’s come back, took you long enough, what were you doing? laying on your mountain like the bloody queen of sheba?" and she gives him a look and tells him to shut up but she’s totally smiling

and then there’s just this tiny kappa girl hiding behind him with HUGE DARK GLISTENY EYES staring at her

Nano could be a phoenix tho. But instead of being related to fire, being related to flux! Lalna could be a Gremlin (my bestiary says Gremlins are inventors and specially good with machines but EEEEVIL...)... And don't forget Martyn, that could be an ent, and Panda, that could be an Waheela. If Xeph is a centaur, it says here that "the animal and human of this creature tend to be in conflit with each other, making it unpredictably violent or sympathetic". Just a fact u_u.

alright but what about nano being a kappa and being bffs with nilesy and having a big crush on his big scary bird friend B) imagine her little webbed hands and feet! i also thought of nano as maaaybe some variation on a mothman creature…she’d look very cute as a big moth

gremlin sounds about right for lalna, he could also be a gnome tho! o: WoW gnomes have always been like my go-to for tiny cute fantasy creatures that’re good with machines AND HE WAS ONE IN YE OLDE GOONE SQUADE

martyn could definitely be an ent, and panda could definitely be a waheela (now that i know what those are!) o:

idk why xephos is a centaur, somebody drew him as one when i started monstercast and it stuck but idk it does kind of suit him? i know centaurs are supposed to be really violent and stuff but if you consider him as Just A Horse it really kinda fits. he’s really gangly and skittish and nervous

TEE IS GODZILLA. Rythian is a Look-behind (from gf) and darn zoey should be a ignis fatuus because fire or a trickster spirit. NILES IS A CATFISH-MERDUDE that lives in a lake deep far in a forest with the fearsome griffin Lom that chases intruders. Lemme get my bestiary because if we gonna talk headcannons we gonna do it right.

niles has always been some sort of merperson in my monstercast he was ORIGINALLY a siren (like, the kind that kills people) that raps instead of sings. that lake is full of skeletons. he also has his CATfish, lyndon, but he should totally have catfish features too that’d be so cute wtf
