Here is the episode of MonsterTalk which features H.P Lovecraft recommended by @conn1968 a couple of weeks ago.
The podcast overall is really interesting and extremely well produced (it also has an episode on Megalodon, my one true fave), so definitely check it out!
managed to read the first volume of monster. when it comes to the polish language, some sentences are stylistically weird. there's definitely at least one incorrectly conjugated word. but it was good enough for me to get into the story and so I stopped paying attention to whether there's more to criticize. I honestly can't tell if my bar is high or low when it comes to this; I'd have been way more sure of myself some years ago, I feel like I lost a lot of language efficiency (all languages and in all directions).
and of course when it comes to the translation itself I just can't say. there are definitely some differences between this and the netflix english translation of the anime, but again; english vs polish, and anime vs manga. so who knows.
I wish I spoke all languages at once.
anyway I'm keeping it, and I'm going to read all of it, can't say I didn't have a blast.

idk how it is in the manga, but I love what we get about eva right after this lunge ep. she's also something else. three marriages. rich as sin. standing in the rain looking up at tenma's window, lonely and miserable out of her fucking mind. obsessed with tenma as well, possessive over him after all these years, and now - I hesitate to say 'actively suicidal' because she was scared of roberto shooting her, but she was absolutely negligent when it comes to her safety, which is a nice parallel with lunge from last ep in which he almost bled to death bc he wouldn't uncuff tenma so he could help! so something something parallels, obsession, but oh I love the clear opposites too. lunge pointing a gun at tenma, eva having a gun pointed at herself; and most important of all, while lunge refuses to believe johan exists as anything else but tenma's other personality? eva actually saw him. she knows for a fact he exists and that he shot junkers. I really am tickled by this 'compare and contrast' these two eps did with them.
I also started writing my thoughts about eva and tenma's relationship in general and it got to be twice as long as this bit above, so, no, it's late, to drafts it goes and maybe tomorrow.
watched ep 22 AND YES. I remember. This Was the Moment. this was the exact point when I became unwell about Lunge. I love obsessive characters and here he is, not giving a crap about the real killer of this particular case he knows is sitting right in front of him because it's Tenma he cares about, and he has to be right about this, he's always right, it's the only thing that matters to him now; which is so fucking sad of him, BUT ALSO him openly admitting to everyone how much fun he has chasing Tenma? grinning like that on the hospital bed after getting stabbed and almost dying? the whole exchange between him and Tenma: his I'll shoot you vs Tenma's I will save you. which on its own is such a fantastic insight into the very core of the entire story??
I was WAITING for something to make me feel like this again, jumping between various things lately, poking them with a stick all like, come on, do something to my brain's pleasure system, and here it is! Monster; and Lunge in all his obsessive, so very incorrect, pathetic but somehow so entertaining glory. thank you Mr Naoki Urasawa.

nothing will beat the rug heckel got obsessed with as a 'it's a surprise tool that'll help us later'. people are being kidnapped, there's a nazi hate crime in the making, serial killer on the loose, and heckel's like I NEED TO STEAL THIS RUG. and he does! he runs around with it but CAN'T run from the plot. he only wants the rug. he's so close to success. and in the end it is this fucking rug that is at the last moment used to put out the fire that'd swallow the whole district. if not for his little side quest and desperate attempts to ignore what was going on around him the most the gang could do was throw themselves on the fire I guess which I dunno could be all that successful.
in pain x2 and not working today so i'm watching monster and lunge just appeared and hehehe. hehehehe.

i really should read it, instead of watching it again, but watching easier. but manga prettier. oh, pain.
apparently lunge still fires up the same receptors in my brain because i took one look at him and went :D:D:D immediately. i love this guy.
i love tenma so fucking much too, the beginning of this show is really so fucking good with him going from "i just followed the director's orders" to repeating to himself that he did the right thing.
