It's time for Day 24 with another #monstober prompt, an aswang. Since these creatures are shapeshifters, it was a lot of fun to choose what elements to use in my sketch. Aswang are shapechangers from Filipino folklore. They appear as normal people during the day, and could be anyone in your community. At night though, they take on horrifying shapes while they go out to feed. They often seem to take on wings, either bat or feathered, and always a grow a long, thin tongue. This tongue is used to drain the life from small children and pregnant women. Day 19 is here and we have a prompt I was very excited to do. From #monstober is harionago, and I combined it with #niktober2018 and the prompt mirror. A harionago is a yokai from Japanese folklore. For those who don't know about them, yokai are a group of supernatural beings who are said to live throughout Japan. Demon isn't the right translation, because they aren't all malevolent and don't have any sort of devil or master to follow. Perhaps they're more comparable to the fey of Celtic folklore. Supernatural beings who have their own motivations and may help or harm. Now back to the harionago. They always appear as a woman, and upon an initial glance they look like a normal woman. Look closer though, and you'll notice that her hair is different, it moves almost like it has a life of its own. Look closer still, and you're sure that it must be moving of its own accord against the wind. The ends of her hair look different, thicker somehow. By the time you get close enough to truly get a good look it's too late, she has ensnared you. You see, the harionago can control her hair as easily as you can your fingers. Her hair also has barbs on the ends, to slash or trap her victims. She tends to prey on young men, but only those who laugh or smile back at her after she first laughs at them. Then, most gruesomely, she eats them. I have been so excited for Day 16! When I saw that for #monstober it was Dracula's bride, and for #niktober2018 it was komorebi, I couldn't wait to combine the two! Komorebi is a Japanese word that we don't have an equivalent for in English. It describes the look of when sunlight filtres through the trees onto something, giving a play of light and shadow. Happy Inktober Day six everyone! Today we have a rusulka lurking towards us from #monstober . Rusulkas have a long and interesting history in mythology, and it gives her a reason to look so upset. Originally, they were basically water nymphs who lived in Russia and other Slavic countries. Benevolent beings who played in the rivers and streams of that land, they came out of the water each spring to refresh the land and bring back the flowers. Around the same time that Catholicism entered the land, they began to be seen as much darker beings. Stories were told of them snatching men and dragging them to their dooms. Over time their status as nature spirits was lost, and instead they were said to be the angry spirits of drowned women (either those who were murdered or committed suicide, usually over a man.)
