Honestly? The veterinarian has to pick a favorite animal? No can do, so vermin it is.
The thing I like about vermin is that they scale up nicely. You can have some variety in the encounters, ease your PCs into it so to speak, while at the same time providing the sense that the beasts are getting bigger and badder the deeper you go into the dungeon. Every other encounter the vermin get bigger, and bigger, until one day...
Enter the Megapede.
Yes, this Colossal Vermin is munching through some cows with unusually placed intestines. What dairy cows are doing in the warm deserts where this beast lives, I have no idea. It's a totally inappropriate place for European type dairy cattle, especially with a colossal megapede running around.
This impressive creature is not your normal monstrous centipede. Oh no, he goes far beyond that. He's not Challenge Rating 9, or even 12. This bad boy is a CR20 beast, which means he's trotting through the warm deserts eating everything in his way short of the strongest of Blue Dragons.
