Spoilers Warning: Maybe don't read this because I have a few complains here and there.
Yes, I still enjoyed the show but so many unnecessary sub-plots...
In all honesty, I flew through The Fosters Season 2 faster than I did for season 1 but I much preferred what was discussed, how it was portrayed and how it was then settled in season 1. In season 2, we continue to see the Fosters working through everything and anything to adopt Callie, we also see Brandon having a minor quarter-life crisis because of the injury he sustained in season 1. What was new in season 2 was Mariana's attachment issues, which might I add, was a good addition to the show.
I liked seeing Callie's storyline in this season. Her story taught me a lot about adoption and emancipation and although Sophia really annoyed me initially, she was a sweet addition too. Yes, a tad bit obsessive but as an older sister myself, I understood Callie's smile every time she saw Sophia. As for Robert, I really liked this man so...what was the point of giving him the infidelity storyline? The entire season showed his healthy relationship with his wife, I saw how much he loves his daughters and the only toxic thing about Robert's family was his own father. So, I understand the producers needed something to convince us viewers that Robert would agree to that extension but really? Infidelity? It's like getting a group to sing a song and suddenly someone starts singing the same song but in a different language. Makes sense only if this was another family and not the Quinns... Back to Callie, I love her growth in this season. Every single time I thought Callie was going to spiral and make a wrong decision, she proved me wrong (except that one time with Brandon, again).
I personally do not have much to say about Brandon except, I was positively surprised and so proud he appeared right at the end of the last episode. I really thought he was going to disappoint Mike again... I can only imagine how much more I was going to be irritated by this season if Brandon did not appear.
With Jesus, this boy... It's always a roller coaster ride with him. At first you're gonna like him but then he's going to hurt some poor girl like he always does and then you doubt yourself for even liking him at all. Yet, after that he's going to do other things to give himself a redemption arc which might I add, actually works! I do think the producers were sleeping when they worked on Jesus's character.
Now, I cannot talk about the Fosters without mentioning Mariana. She is a very special person, completely kicking all kinds of stereotype into the trashcan. This season, I really saw that though Mariana is a very strong person, she's also sadly ridden with her own vulnerabilities. Something I see a lot in female-centric fantasy novels, a trope I love. What saddened me was that Mariana is extremely thoughtful and hella empathetic but...the people around her tend to disregard her. Sure, they would come around in the end but she always went through small span of time when nobody knew what was she going through. If one of the fosters are to be labelled as a cinnamon roll, then Mariana is the one.
Weirdly enough, I don't see Jude as much this season. Every time he appeared, he was usually going through some kind of crisis: Callie's adoption, Connor and Connor's father, and his own sexuality. I just felt that in this season, Jude's just bottling too much up.
And Connor, boy... Can he get anymore irritating? Stringing Jude on the way he did. I get it, I do. He's also questioning his sexuality and with a father like his, how was he going to come to terms with his sexuality right? But it was not fair to toy with Jude that way when he knew he was struggling. However, I also understand he's so young, it's so new to him and he really had nobody to talk to. I just really didn't like how sad Jude was every time Connor did something disappointing. Actually, half the time Jude was upset in this season was because of Connor. These boys are still young so they will grow and learn afterwards, but at this moment? Their relationship/friendship is toxic.
Finally! Monte and Lena, WAS THAT NECESSARY?! And that accident at the end... The Fosters Season 2 was headed somewhere good until the finale episode ruined it.
