Drabble: From the Mouth of Babes

Title: From the Mouth of Babes Word Count: 908 Rating: PG Characters: Arabella James-Michaels, Gabriel James-Michaels, Andrew James, Kale Johnson (mentioned), Velvet Starr (mentioned) Pairings: None implied Warnings: None? Summary: The world according to Bella James-Michaels.

The sounds are strange, and there’s too much to focus on. But then there’s a voice - a warm deep voice that wasn’t familiar, but it was comforting. It was a nice voice. And then… She was being moved from her nice warm bed, and into the man’s arms. Oh. This was better than the bed. This was warmer, and he smelled familiar. And his face. His face was nice - she liked his face.

“Hi, Arabella.” The man’s gentle voice soothed, and it was like everything was okay in the world. “I guess I’m your Grandpa.” 

Is that what he was? A grandpa? Well, whatever a grandpa was, she liked him.

Her adult was silly. He was sitting on the floor making faces. His fingers were wiggling in the air which made Bella giggle. Her adult  was always so silly, and she loved how silly he was. She bounced in her walking chair, as he sang a nonsense song. Then there was that loud sound that meant he was going to talk to people she couldn’t see. Probably her Kale. She liked her Kale. He wore pretty dresses.

As grandpa started to get up, she realized that she didn’t want him to leave. She wanted him to stay on the floor with her. At day care she heard what the other kids said when they didn’t want their adults to leave. So, she said what they said. “Dada no!”  And it worked. He stopped moving, and forgot all about the singing square in his pocket. His face went all soft. The corners of his mouth turned up, and his eyes went all sparkly. “Dada.” She said again, lifting her arms to get out of her walking chair.

He didn’t move, which was not what she wanted, but finally he got on his knees and walked over to her. “Grandpa.” He said gently, but his face still looked happy. “I’m your grandpa.” And he finally picked her up and lifted her into his arms. “If I knew you were going to start talking today, I’d have my camera on.”

She didn’t know what that meant, but she knew what worked to get his attention now. “Dada.” She said in response, patting his mouth with her hand. “Dada.”

The loud sound happened again, but this time Dada didn’t put her down so that was okay. He still started talking to the person on the phone though. “Sorry, Vee. Bella said her first word! No. I’m not telling you what it was. I have to tell everyone at once so no one can change their bets.”

He was talking and talking, but that was okay. She liked his voice. She closed her eyes and let Dada talk away.

Sometimes she was stuck in a little room inside a big room. It had walls she could see through, and there were always toys, but she couldn’t get to her Daddy when he put her in the little room. The big room was the one with all the stuff she wasn’t allowed to touch. He liked to be in this room a lot, but Bella never understood why. It had weird things in it, and all he did was stare at a big piece of paper and color on it. She didn’t understand, but it made her Daddy happy, and that was okay she supposed. Except for the fact that she was bored.

“Daddy.”

He didn’t respond right away. Instead he colored for a few more moments, before saying: “Grandpa.”

And there he was with that again. She didn’t understand why he didn’t like it when she called him by his name. Or that name. Her Kale and Aunt Vee called him a different name. “Daddy.” She challenged back.

He sighed. “Grandpa.”

“Dad?” And oh! She loved that voice, too. It was Brother! It was DJ.

“Deejie!” She squealed out before making grabby hands so he could rescue her from the little room. “Deejie!”

He grinned, and rescued her from her prison. 

“See, that doesn’t help.” Daddy said as he turned away from his coloring, and went to wash his hands. “She hears you call me that and then she thinks it’s my name.”

Brother rolled his eyes. “It is your name.” He pointed out before making a funny face at her, and making her giggle. “What is she supposed to call you? Gabe?”

Daddy didn’t say anything at first, and instead dried his hands off. “Kids call their grandparents by their first names all the time. Grandpa Gabe has a nice ring to it.” He said before coming over, and giving Brother a hug that left Bella in the middle of them. She giggled and pushed Daddy away from her.

“Grandpa Gabe?” Brother asked with a snort. “That sounds like a mouthful. How’s she’s supposed to say that? I can barely say that.” And then he looked at her again. “Can you say Grandpa Gabe?”

She wrinkled her face up for a moment as she thought about it. “G’pa Gay.” She said and made a face. Daddy also made a face so that was okay, too. “GG” She tried again. Oh, that didn’t sound as bad. Daddy sounded better, but GG was okay, too. “GG?”

He smiled and took her out of Brother’s arms. “That works for me if it works for you, Bella.”

She thought about it for a moment before snuggling into his arms. “GG.” She agreed with a yawn. “GG.”

Survey: Mindset

1) What would completely break your character?

Losing his family again. When he lost his kids the first time, he barely survived. If it were to happen again, he’d completely lose his shit.

2) What's the best thing that has happened in your character’s life?

There are a couple of standout moments. The birth of his children are one. Meeting Johnny is another one. Getting custody of Bella is a third.

3) What's the worst thing that has happened in your character’s life?

Definitely Georgie’s murder, and his subsequent prison stay.

4) What seemingly insignificant memories stick with your character?

There’s a couple of moments that always standout to Gabe. Laying up on the roof of his childhood home with Georgie, just staring up at the night sky. Sitting in the visitation area during a prison holiday visit with Johnny, drinking tea out of shitty styrofoam cups.

5) What is your character reluctant to tell people?

There’s a couple of things, but probably the main thing is about his prison time. Even though he was eventually acquitted and his conviction was overturned, he sees the way people judge him when he tells them.

6) How does your character feel about sex?

He was conflicted when he was younger. He grew up in a household where gay sex was considered a sin. It took him a long time to accept that wanting a sex life with a man was fine. These days he’s very comfortable with his sexual orientation, and he’s very gropey as far as his husband is concerned.

7) What would your character make a scene about in public?

There’s a couple of things he’d make a scene about. Anything to do with his kids - especially regarding Bella’s well-being. Anytime he sees someone being discriminated against in a shop, he can’t help but to step in. If only because of his past.

8) What would your character give their life for?

His family – hands down.

9) What are your character’s major flaws?

He’s really bad about talking, and saying his feelings out loud. It’s gotten him in trouble on multiple occasions.

10) What does your character pretend to care about?

Soccer. Whenever his son talks about the intramural soccer league he’s in, Gabe pretends like he cares, but he honestly doesn’t understand soccer at all.

11) What is your character afraid of?

He’s not afraid of it per say, but he’s definitely no longer a fan of small spaces.

12) What is something most people do that your character thinks is dumb?

How terrible does it make him if he says go to church? He spent a good majority of his life in churches, and he honestly doesn’t understand it.

13) Where would your character fall on a politeness/rudeness scale?

He’s probably somewhere in the middle. Sometimes his swearing makes him appear ruder than he really is.

14) Is your character the type to re-read a book? If they are, what book have they re-read?

Yes, actually. He re-reads Catch-22 every year.

15) Does your character believe in an afterlife? Why or why not?

Hell, yes he does. If only because it gives him hope that he’ll get to see his sister again one day.

16) What is something your character feels strongly about?

There’s a lot of things, but one of the things he can go on and on about? Tara was an underrated character who should have never been killed off Buffy.

17) What is something your character wishes they could say to an ex?

Oh, there are so many fucking things he wants to say to Nancy, but the number one thing he wishes he could tell her? You’re under arrest.

18) What is one dream your character has had, even if it made no sense?

He once dreamt that he was Kale, which was probably one of the most bizarre dreams he’s ever had.

19) What is the stupidest thing your character has ever done just because someone said they couldn’t?

When they were teenagers, Derrick dared him to climb to the roof of their high school, which he did – only to get himself fucking stuck on the fucking roof when the door locked behind him. Derrick has to help him figure out how the fuck to get him down without getting detention for being up on the roof.

20) Does your character indulge in anything? If they do, what is it? If they don’t, why?

Tea – definitely tea. And he really likes scones. He has no idea why – maybe it’s the consistency?
