Russell’s Selenographia was one of the most detailed maps of the moon available at the time. By recreating what he saw through a telescope, he was able to make the details of the moon visible to more people. Only a few of them were ever produced, but one of them is also on display at the National Maritime Museum.
James McNeil Whistler , this is his painting 'NOCTURNE' , he was a second artist whom paintings of the moon I found interesting. A lot of 19th century art was inspired by the moon and particularly the scope of light thrown by the moon on each night as it progresses through the gibbous stages.
