Sensing that Divine Spark

There are the moral rules and regulations that keep a society at peace with itself.  These laws and mores and rules are what keep everything in place and are created for the good of all of the citizens of that society.  The key word being “all”.  Whenever any rule or law or regulation is harmful to any one member of that society that law is subject to scrutiny by the citizens and kept as is, amended to fit the current society, or tossed out completely as no longer needed or wanted or fulfilling the job it was enacted to do.  The laws and rules and mores and regulations are changeable and not written in stone.  They are written in ink by members of society.  They can be read and they can be changed.

There is another set of moral rules and regulations that have to do with the individual human.  These rules are not written and are not changeable.  Each and every individual has a spark of the divine within and it is to that spark which one listens and hears and senses and strives with.  There is no written code or law or regulation.  There is nothing save the individual and that spark of the divine.  You would hope that the actions and reactions that are sensed by you from your spark of he divine would correlate with others in a society, but that may not be the case.  To each and every individual comes the responsibility to strive for the divine - for a return to the divine.

These two set of codes - laws - mores - regulations - rules sometime come into conflict.  There is no problem save that each and every individual needs to decide for themselves which code is to be followed.  Notice that I have used the word “individual”.  Notice I have said that one set of rules are not written down.  Notice that I have said “divine spark”.  If society’s set of law conflicts with your set of laws you have to decide which path you are going to follow.  There are no absolutes.  There are no right or wrong answers.  There is only the decision.  There is only your responsibility for your decision.  There is only you and your divine spark journeying through the universe toward unity and one-ness

Moral rules

The moral rules that prevail in any society are sometimes unambiguous and universally accepted and sometimes complex, subtle and contested. Social convention, motivated by convenience or power, provides a complex overlay, and many of the rules we take to be eternal and universal are no more than convention [....] The post-modern failure was the inability to see through the overlay to the moral absolute beneath. It should not be though that an individual's adherence to moral rules is always and everywhere a response to the unifying principle [a sense of justice and compassion]. More usually, it is the result of internalised expectations and prohibitions learnt as a child and reinforced by daily interaction. A harmonious society maintains order by widespread internalisation of the moral rules--the policeman within--and by enforcement of laws.

Despite all my moral rules, I'm going to tell my best friend how much he's hurt me. I hope I don't die in the process. In other news, this snow and five degree weather really makes me want to go skiing, now.
