Red Rising Fandom: ’Golden Son’ Character Death Theory. WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS!
Okay, fellow Howlers, I’ve been thinking about this theory for a little while now. And while I may not have an abundance of evidence to prove it, I think the couple of screenshots I provide here will be enough to get you to see where I’m coming from.
My theory is that Victra may NOT be dead, even after what happened to her during The Triumph. Here are my reasons:
It all started when I saw this in Pierce’s interview about Morning Star for Entertainment Weekly. I know what you’re probably thinking, but I’m not trying to stir up shipping wars or anything! This is just legitimately what spurred my theory, haha. We know right now that Sevro will get a girlfriend in the final installment. When I heard this news, I instantly mulled over who I thought it could be (especially since it is definitely someone we know). As I began thinking about it, I realized the choices were very few. If we’re only focusing on very major characters, that leaves Mustang and Victra. Mustang doesn’t seem likely to me considering all she’s been through with Darrow, and how considerably little she tends to interact with Sevro (correct me if I’m wrong on this). Granted, the girlfriend COULD be a lesser character, or even someone we don’t expect to return to the story (such as a Howler, a past ally, or even a Red or other color). But, to me, all signs seemed to point to Victra as a likely candidate. Although Sevro previously fell for Quinn, a very kindhearted girl, she definitely wasn’t a weakling. We all know he doesn’t seem to be the type to go for delicate women (hehehe). Victra takes no shit and is confident, which might appeal to him. She also cares immensely about Darrow (NOT just romantically/sexually), so she and Sevro definitely share that common ground. What really cemented this idea for me, though, was this quick exchange nearing the end of Golden Son:
At this point, tensions were rising and a more serious tone was coming into play as The Triumph neared its beginning. However, Pierce slipped in a quick teasing jab from Darrow to Sevro about liking Victra. The comment gets no response and is quickly glossed over as they move on to the next subject. My question is: why include it at all, then, if not to provide foreshadowing? Darrow certainly knows Sevro better than anyone, so it’s totally feasible that he could tell if his friend had a crush on someone. Sevro doesn’t deny the comment, either. Another huge factor pointing to this being true is the placement in the book. This moment occurs only pages before the ending of the book, which signals to me that it may be part of the setup for the next installment. Of course we all got initially distracted by The Triumph (by distracted, I mean, gasping, screaming and crying), but even small parts of the dialogue before it occurs might hold hints about what is to come.
Finally, my last piece of evidence is this: We are led to believe Victra is dead because of the high body-count already amassed. Especially because she was shot in the spine and is bleeding heavily, it is likely she is gone for good. But if you think about it, she made out better than most of the dead at The Triumph. She wasn’t shot in the neck, shot in the head, stabbed in the belly, or completely beheaded like the others. This is an injury she could POSSIBLY come back from. She might be paralyzed or weakened in some way, but there is a possibility her eyes closing and her hand slackening mean she has just passed out. The Telemanuses could still rescue her after the Jackal and his people have fled the scene.
Well, that’s my theory! I know there isn’t much evidence here, but it’s just something interesting to think about. It seems strange to hinge her being alive on a relationship with Sevro (that has not actually been built up all that much), but it made me THINK, for sure. Have any of you thought about this possibility before, or just me? Honestly, I absolutely adore Victra, so it might just be my denial of her leaving us! But still, I feel like these instances definitely hold SOME weight. Tell me what you all think! Love all of you crazy Howlers, and can’t wait for Morning Star.
